IMG_20190511_100740.jpg Please could someone identify what these new leaves could be? They have sprouted next to what was a beautiful old hydrangea that didn't survive being next to a new pathway being laid.
Many thanks to anyone who can help.

its looks like its is the "old hydrangea" producing suckers , original was very hard cut back so I am not suprised it didnt regrow also when was it hard cut back ? . Just leave alone if you are happy ( keep a eye out for slugs with the new growth) but if not leave till autumn as this will give them time to produce more roots (more viable to survive) dig up and replant in a new spot.

Thank you - it was cut back about 2 months ago when we had a new driveway laid. We can't dig it up incase it disturbs the new path's foundations. We didn't know whether to try and cut it off flush with the soil and just let the new leaves grow round it.
