    This is about 16 " long, at the bottom of the compost heap in my allotment

          If my wife saw that in the garden she'd run into the house screaming and would never be seen gardening outside again.

              I have quite a few of these mainly in the compost heap, but they crop up all over the place, under rocks, in long grass, down the sides of raised beds in fact anywhere there is a bit of shelter.
              Have to rescue one from a cat occasionally.

                I don't like snakes of any kind. Although the slow worm isn't considered one, at least it's harmless.

                It's not a snake, it's a legless lizard and has a gross trick if picking it up by it's tail as Pete says.
