Hello, I was wondering if someone might be able to help me...

I'm wanting to plant something in a bucket. I have a few specifications:

    • I want to grow something myself from seed, but I would like it to be fairly fast growing!
    • I would like it to last a fairly long time
    • I would like it to be attractive, although not necessarily flowering
    • It would be kept indoors
    • As I am a poor student I would prefer it to be fairly cheap to buy/ look after!
    • Also I would like it to be able to survive a few days neglection!
    I think that's all...
So I was hoping for some ideas and suggestions. It would be greatly appreciated :D

Hi Bukkit and welcome. Sweetpeas is right about herbs, you could grow basil etc easily from seed.

Or you could buy an avocado, take out the large egg shaped seed inside and eat the avocado. Push 3 matchsticks into the seed, about half way up and evenly spaced around the seed, and place widest side down onto a glass filled with water. keep the water topped up and soon roots will start to grow into the glass, followed by a shoot comng from the top. When the shoot has 3 or 4 leaves on you can plant it in the bucket. You will not get any avocadoes but it will make a nice and fairly fast growing houseplant.

You could also try orange or lemon seeds.

Thanks sweetpeas and Blackthorn for the replies :)

I don't think I want to grow herbs, not exactly sure why.
I was considering orange or lemon, I will have a think about the avocado idea now too :)

If you have a Wilkinsons near you they are currently selling lemon trees for £4-can`t say cheaper than that.

Blackthorn-I`m intrigued, how do you get three matchsticks into the hard seed of an avocado?

I`m gonna try that-always wanted an avocado tree. Your doing horticulture at college-which type are the ones that grow tiny avocados that I saw some birds eating on a nature show? Somewhere exotic.

    Haha, well...
It is a pretty metal bucket, yellow with butterflies on it, not just a rubbishy plastic one! :gnthb:

I had the bucket and was wondering what I could do with it, and thought it might be nice to plant something...

Also if I am to have a plant it must be easily transportable :)

Ah, I see, so you could quite easily use it like a posh ceramic plant pot, good idea. The drainage issue does need to be addressed so whatever you choose make sure it is a fifty-fifty compost and vermiculite mix with a layer of gravel at the base of the plastic pot and just plonk it in.

Whatever it is you decide on let us know.

... and to ensure the plants don't sit in water and drown you will need to make a hole in the bottom of your bucket, bukkit.

Aww I was hoping to be able to use the cheap tesco compost hehe :o

I don't know how exactly I could make a hole in the bucket but I'm sure I'll find a way.

And I'll definitely let you know what I decide on, maybe even with photos :D
