        Thanks fir the information @wiseowl.
I must say it's one of my favourites as the scent is spicy rather than sweet.
Also, it's one I can rely on to give us some cut flowers for the table on Christmas Day. I think it's only failed to do so once in the last ten years or so.

Until I read this thread I've never really given the two climbing roses around my front door much thought. They came from Woolies around 20 years ago so no idea what they are and apart from the odd prune when I get assaulted on the way in that's it.
BUT, they smell gorgeous and have lots of blooms and along with the lavender and golden rod attract bees and hover flies.
Perhaps my interest might be rekindled so what would be the best way to propagate from them?
          Thanks.
          Rob
Just seen the thread started by Freddy so got the info from there.

How could anyone love them all or hate them all. I’m, like most people, somewhere in the middle. My all time favourite is Rosa Banksii lutea, a species from the Himalayas. I first saw it growing at Kew over 40 years ago and have planted one in every garden I’ve ever had since. It’s a climber, gets pretty big and needs a south facing wall. And it is thornless! Picture in the link below.

Other than that I’m keen on shrub roses and old roses, I like them in mixed hedges and like the wild ones too, as much for their hips in winter as the flowers. These days I prefer single flowers for the benefits to pollinating insects. I have a Dorthy Perkins growing on an old wall and it’s gorgeous against the old bricks.

Recently I had a trip to northern Scotland and encountered the Scottish briar; what a gorgeous rose and a beautiful scent. I’m going to try and get one.

I’ve no experience of DA roses but have heard mixed things. I don’t use chemicals so any that require a spraying regime I won’t consider and I don’t like HTs.

So there’s my two pennies worth on liking (or not) roses.

I adore Roses, that special fragrance and beautiful blooms, only a very small downside is the disease bit but like us and all plants if we aren't fed and watered properly we won't thrive and I understand the weather is against us at times but they keep on coming.I've tried and still trying 'companion planting'...but to me a Rose is very special and should take center stage.

Well, as people know I think Rose growing and selling is the biggest Con trick ever pulled on the gullible populace.

Good afternoon I grow Roses and can assure you I have never conned anyone ever and I resent your remarks they have no place in this thread and if you cannot add a positive post then please refrain from saying anything.

Hey now then peeps this is not the sort of talk in a rose thread..
@Palustris I think that is a huge sweeping statement to make, I think you are being a little OTT.. There are the usual Rose growers who give us beautiful plants at good prices.. There are private Rose growers who are more than willing to share rooted cuttings of their plants.. There are of course all the cheap shops selling roses as well.. Not I think the best quality.....
I will always buy a rose rooted locally, than one from the big growers as I feel that is the real way roses get about.. My local nurseryman and a local rose grower got together and gave us the Wickwar rose back in the late 50s..
I have noticed that the ones of this strain are now different from the big growers these days from the original we we still have in the village..

So yes @Palustris there is big money to be made, but without a lot of the big growers we would not be enjoying all the strains that we do now..

                      Blimey, what’s that all about?

Roses. They were never really my thing. I always thought them as a bit..old-fashioned. Bit by bit, I’ve grown to appreciate them. I also found them a bit daunting, when it comes to care and pruning. This year they have really flowered well, and have had some stunning blooms. I have decided to make an effort to understand this pruning malarkey, already looking forward to next year :)

I love them. They seem to love our heavy clay soil and do very well. We don't spray them. They get covered in black fly every year but then the sparrows come along and clear the black fly to feed their chicks. They get deadheaded to repeat flower and fed, but that's all. The scent is wonderful. Yellow roses are my favourite. They tend to keep their leaves all year in our garden too surprisingly.

Ahh, so Wickwar, gotcha  Back in the 70’s, I used to help out at the youth club there for a little while. Almost opposite the pub, The Butthay?
Sorry folks, as you were :)
