I think political correctness only serves to create tension. My Taiwanese friend quite openly discusses the culture difference between what he is used to, and what he finds here in Britain. We make jokes at each other and openly acknowledge our differences. If we were to stifle our differences, each side would come to resent the other for not treating the with respect by stifling our true characteristics. I wonder how many here would like to be refered to as something like "nondescript gender indeterminate individual of no specific background or interest" just so that people could avoid any term that might refer to their characteristics.

I agree-I don`t speak with an Irish accent, my Nanna lost her accent except strangely whenever she had a few at Christmas, I am not discernably of Irish descent and yet when asked I would say I am of Irish ( Cork) stock.

I am reminded of the sketch where they are "Going for an English" it was very funny, as long as we keep a sense of humour it will be alright-it`s got a lot to do with the context as pointed out above.

The comment he made was when he was at Sandhurst, 3 years ago. Have the media really so little to write about that they drag up this? And which of his "comrades" sold him out and sold this story to the News of the World, that bastion of PC-ness (NOT!)?

"Blimey Paul, so its OK to do it as long as no one finds out about it"

Precisely, In the right context ie to like minded friends then fine. In the context I can accept that the joke made was not intended to cause offence....... to do it on video were it can later be shown and miss interpreted and indeed cause offense to others however is the height of stupidity.

I believe in free speech but one has to be careful in the way one goes about things. Anyone care to remember Salmon Rushdie and the satanic verses?

A very interesting piece of literature but my goodness did it cause him bother!!!

Well it looks like the journalists have run out of news to drag up something as insignificant as this. Then it has been fuelled by the PC brigade who have too much time on their hands. They all would be better occupied by spending time on the front line in Afganistan, I wonder what they would call someone who would kill them given half a chance, calling your mortal enemy a raghead is very restrained in my opinion.

I think racism only has meaning if it is intended to be offensive. To call someone Aussie, Yank, Paki or Pom is not neccessarily offensive.

I am hoping that one good thing will come out of the coming recession. That we will return to common sense. Banks will no longer hand out 130% mortgages. Hedge funds will no longer borrow up to 100 times their capital base (yes that figure is correct), Bankers and Footballers will be paid a reasonable wage not their ridiculous sums, and that political correctness will be buried.

This might well happen. Judging by the silly costs of a ticket to watch a premier league football match, a lot of people will not be going during the recession, therefore the money might not be in such abundance to pay not only these over inflated wages but also the obscene amounts clubs pay for players.

I doubt his paternity will ever be made real.

I see the news are STILL going on about this. The (unelected) PM is reveling in it - well it distracts the hoi polloi from the real issues going on.

I still reckon that the news of the world probably has a stock pile of these tapes lying around and when the news gets a tad boring then there they'll magically make one appear...but even so those remarks weren't meant to offend anyone, it's not like he had a large nail bat and was repeatedly bludgeoning one of them over the head is it?

Even so sometimes you do think to yourself how stupid you have to be to say things like that in front of a camera....

Mr 02 says "we were always having a go at each other and it was just banter and just good fun. We all gave as good as we got".
