Is it possible to buy little plastic sticks to put in the ground and label plants - I don't eat enough lolipops to collect enough sticks though do lolipop sticks look nicer than plastic ones?

    Do you make your own?

Where can I buy some from?

I try to remember or failing that draw a rough plan of where things have been planted.

Yes - these are freely on sale in garden centres. You can get different colours as well. I use them mainly for plants in pots, and I like to colour code - perennials from annuals, tender plants etc.

I tried using felt tip pens. They show up well, but fade in the sun and can't be removed. So I now use a soft pencil, and when its done it can be erased and used again.

I cut up used plastic milk bottles; cut into strips with a little pointy end and voila! Write on them using a sharpy pen, pencil or grease pencil

I buy them from Wilkinsons - they are cheap, about £1.50 for fifty including a pencil. I use a lot of them to label up seed trays and potted up plants.

As do I-waste not, want not. Did buy some once, but after using some I lost the stash I had and made do with this method. I found the wooden lollipop sticks have the problem of the ink bleeding into the grain and I can`t make head nor tail of them afterwards.

Course this all depends on me remembering to lable in the first place.

I buy plastic ones, but one batch I had were so shiny I couldn't write on them, so that's perhaps something to check before you leave the shop.

I write on them in pencil, which seems to last well. Have tried permanent marker, which worked fine on the shiny ones, but as Peter said it fades ...

... haven't tried chinagraph(sp?) pencil, but that might be an answer.

Labels on Gladioli etc. I store with the corms, and thus reuse the label next year because I can find it!

I dont use labels much because I always remember exactly what everything is.:D

At least thats what I tell myself, until after the winter, and its a dead looking stick and I cant remember what it was that I bought last year, maybe I'll recognise it when the leaves come out in the spring.:D

So I actually bought some lables recently, as the odd bits of white formica I have used in the past dont look very impressive if you decide to give a plant to someone else.:)

After a year or so all my labels seem to disappear or get mixed up in the borders - I blame the kids, although some of them have bite marks on - we had some fox cubs playing in the garden last year and it might have been them. So I've not got a clue what things are when they are dormant - and not much more of a clue when they are growing to be honest :)

Dear old blackbirds toss the labels around all over the place, it is fun to watch but a bit of a nightmare trying to remember where everything is!
