I planted this Fatsia in April and it did well through the summer and autumn, though it needed tons of water otherwise it drooped.

During the winter it has kind of collapsed as per picture.

    Any ideas what is wrong?

It is in a dampish clayey soil. Other plants around it have done well and survived well through the winter which has not been that harsh.

Fatsias can look rather droopy when its cold. Let this current cold snap pass and see if it perks up a bit.

Yep, they look as though they're dying in the frost, but a bit of warmth and sunshine and they perk up no end. Your one looks positively glowing, in comparison to mine last week!

It looks fine, Biker. Just suffering from the cold. You could always throw some fibre fleece over it for a bit of protection from frost.:gnthb:

Thanks for the replies. I'll try to shield it a bit over the next month or so and hope for the best.

    Cheers

The cold makes them droop:D as has been said.

Yours is a young plant, with new growth still coming as the winter came on, you may find the top rots off if it gets really cold.
But it should be OK, maybe a trim back in the spring just before new growth starts may be needed to get it bushy.
    And hopefully flowers next winter.:gnthb:

What Pete says happened to mine (it was a young plant, planted in 2007), including the top rotting and it flowering last month :)

Well, my Fatsia got even droopier and sad but seems to be perking up somewhat with the mild weather. Some of the 'fronds' seem alive but some are flat and lifeless.
Do I trim them off at this stage or just let it make its own way for the next little while?

    cheers

I took a cutting years ago from a leaf stem and it thrived. They really don`t need much help when the spring comes they peerk up a treat ;)
