A couple of years ago a small sapling appeared in a pot of spent compost. I kept it just to see if it would continue to grow which it did. This year I've potted it on into a larger pot and it's thrived. I don't have a blooming clue as to what it is though, can anyone help at all? IMG_8363.jpg IMG_8364.jpg IMG_8365.jpg

I have wondered if it's a birch tree as we have silver birch in the garden?

Thank you @pete. I'm happy that it's birch as the winds took one of ours down a few years ago.

I've got an app called 'picture this.' You take a pic of a plant, shrub, tree, weed...anything really! Run it through the app and it tells you what it is. It was a godsend for me when I took over my patch, and did not have a clue

Sometimes these apps work just fine...but many times they give COMPLETELY wrong answers.

The beauty of forums is there are many knowledgeable folk who actually know and grow the plants. If I get it wrong then there is bound to be someone else who can correct me.

We were at a NT garden last year and someone had one of those apps. We wandered round with him and it got them correct about 70% of the time. :blue thumb:

Although I only disputed about 15% of them, Mrs Shiney disputed all but one. :love30:. It was easy to check because all the plants had labels :heehee:

Some plants are very distinctive and if you know them you can be pretty much be 100% sure.
So guessing the app gets all these ones.
I think that anyone who has tried an I D from a picture would agree that apart from appearance other things like the feel or even the smell can nail some things down.
And an app can't do that.

Somtimes i can be pretty sure I'm looking at a cotoneaster shrub etc, but then which varient?
My plant encyclopedia is good, but it opens your eyes to how many thousands of cultivars there are..

                        Awwww, what a cutie.

The kittycat in my picture is sadly no longer with us, bless her heart. Bronte crossed to the bridge a couple of years ago at the grand age of 17. She was such a chatterbox and we all still miss her a lot. xx

We get silver birch seedlings all the time in our pots, last year i planted a few up to grow on to plant in the wood, they grow very fast.
