I think that history clearly shows that war, and bombs, will never solve this conflict and what Israel is doing to the Palestinian people, in the most denslly populated piece of land on Earth, is nothing short of terrorism. Israel has publicly stated that the aim of this bombing campaign is to put fear into ordinary Palestinians so that they put pressure onto Hamas to stop the missiles, or even to rise up and overthrow them. Hamas was democratically elected and yet it is the mission of the western powers to wipe them out.
Palestinians would be more likely to put pressure on Hamas to stop the missiles if Israel reinstates the Palestinian taxes it withholding, allows aid and food back into the country and allows trade to happen. The people will continue to support Hamas because they have nothing, and therefore nothing to lose. Change that and who knows. It's better than bombs, which will never solve the problem.

You're right Paul, I would feel the same if I were a palestinian. And from the other side of the argument, if I were to be an Israeli and rockets were being launched indiscriminately at my family I would probably support the idea of bombing and sending the tanks in. You can't ignore history as memories last longer than lives. Look at Ireland and how the Orangemen celebrate the Battle of the Boyne over 300 years ago - people are proud of their past and want to settle old scores or keep their old enemies in their place.

Inter: not sure which side you think the yanks will nuke? Thinking about that it doesn't make much difference as any nuclear bomb in that area would take them all out - no I can't see that happening.

It seems this particular enmity has lasted since the before the withdrawal of the Egyptian occupation in circa 1150 BCE so quite some time, you`d think someone would have realised the other side isn`t listening by now wouldn`t you?

Claire, unfortunately history is cyclical, with humans doomed to make the same mistakes again and again. That and religion being used as an excuse for wars will not end until religion itself dies out.

Fancy, how is calling a member of the Jewish faith a Jew, offensive? It`s like my calling a Roman Catholic a Christian. And I take offence, Cajary, at being likened to Oswald Moseley.

I think we should just let them get on with it.

If the problems are as deep seated as most seem to think, then there is no answer.
To blame something that happened during Roman times for something that is happening today, is to me very far fetched.

Its a modern problem, that needs a modern solution.

That is, they all stay within their borders and dont attack one another.
In other words,( as has already been said) a ceasefire, but who will be the intermediary, and how do you keep the peace?

Perhaps the answer is to move the Palestinians in Gaza to the West Bank and call that Palestine? A similar policy was instigated back in the 1920's when Greece and Turkey exchanged vast numbers of patriots and it worked, in spite of the Greeks who were repatrioted having lived in those areas for over 2,500 years.

Like it or not, history has a habit of influencing modern day events.

Just one other thing. Our neighbours 3 doors down are of the Jewish faith, do I call them Israelis or Israelites?

"Although i`m against all wars and violence all i can say is GO ISRAEL bomb the **** out of hamas until they stop firing rockets into israel or better yet just wipe them out completely.
What makes my blood boil so much, is the fact that people go on about israel and say that what they`re doing is wrong etc etc etc.
Excuse but when was the last time your country was underfire from rockets and israel is just defending it`s people from hamas and there rocket fire.
But what gets me is if say (no offence or anything meant) canada was firing rockets on the US, would the US go "oh i know lets just leave them to carry on blowing our people up and destroying our buildings. cause aslong as it doesn`t turn in to a war who cares" no they wouldn`t they`d go invade canada and bomb the **** out of them,as far as i`m concerned the UN and EU have not got a right to interfere,oh and i seem to remember israel helping the palaestinian civilians unlike hamas. "

What an ill considered response, sadly showing an ignorance of the facts.

3 Israeli's dead in 12 months due to a comparative handful of Rockets fired by a minority, Que to start a spree of virtually indiscriminate bombing killing over 200 Palestinians including women and children, many of these Palestinian civilians too young to be members of Hamas.

Do enlighten me as to the Israeli help, aside from building an enormous wall separating farmers from land, starving Palestinian and an indiscriminate and frequent use of force resulting in mass casualties. Oh yes and a former Israeli Minister who deliberately flamed a broken peace deal in 2004.

To be fair to Israel, it has always stepped up to the negotiating table, when the State of Israel was declared, the Arab nations did say they will fight to the death until it`s destroyed-that`s pretty extreme talk.

I have been trying to absorb as much info as possible this afternoon and have to admit they all deserve their legs slapping

I hold Ariel Sharon responsible for a large proportion of the problems in recent years.
