After 50 yrs of using metric measurement at work my mind still thinks in imperial, if asked to guess the size of something I still think in feet and do a quick conversion in my head.

I've used the metric system all my life. At college we were the first year to be taught in fully metric units. Fortunately I can quickly change between the systems. As I worked for American companies this was useful.

I still think in cubits, hundredweight, rod, pole, perch, acre and am a bit annoyed that they now call a ton, a long ton  to distinguish it from the metric tonne. They're spelt differently so why bother to change the name?

Welly exactly that was the problem back in the 18th century... Every country, kingdom, dukedom or even city had its own measuring system. And even if they were somewhat standardized in one dukedom, they all had similar names which lead to lots of confusion.
Of course this didn't matter for the peasant living his whole life in the same spot, but it was poison for the industry, science, trade and lawmakers.

I've lived in this spot for 50 years but I don't think I'm a peasant - I just look like one

I do a fair amount of diy. When i get the tape measure out i often consider 'shall i use imperial today or metric'
On the allotment i always use imperial but on woodwork mostly metric.. I don't know why! I've just finished this cupboard that i made to cover the ugly electrics and meter in the utility room.

Well if it covers the meter, it should be metric
