which tool

hi i am in the middle of build a pond for our garden of sleepers and we wanted a water blade fountain as well but we would like the water feature in a sleeper and woundering how would the best way to cut it out thanks for your advice

Hi just basic tools really. Nothing fancy like electric saw etc

 

With sleepers, I normally use a chainsaw....but as they aren't really in a basic toolkit, it'll be a handsaw, hammer and chisel. This can be a slow and laborious process, but the thought of a celebratory alcoholic beverage when you've finished will make this worthwhile

 

I agree, just cut across the grain at one inch intervals and then chisel it out.

Yes, carefully!
Mark the area to be cut clearly and don't go past it. It's easier to cut some more out, rather than trying to put some more back in

 

Honestly, just buy an electric saw. You'll never regret it.

I did a bit of stuff with sleepers last year. Straight cuts through were fine with a mitre saw, but anything else was far better with a sabre saw. I tried a regular circular saw for making joints, and it just didn't work.

I got this Makita. Add a pack of 250mm saw blades and cutting holes in sleepers is a breeze.
