many thanks for this thread, it's very interesting. I want to try carrots & parnsips this year as well. But it will need to be pretty late on, we get frost until end of may.

Hi capney. It was the wife that prepared it but just having checked, the core has a little amount of browning (dunno what that is), but we cut out most of the core anyway. Otherwise nothing wrong with it at all :thumb: Cheers...freddy.

some great ideas here thanks was just wondering about making a hole with a pole and back filling does it matter about the diameter of the hole or is the important thing just to get it really deep and backfill using compost? ive used the trench method before, dig a v trench a spit and half deep and back fill with compost/sand mixture, alot of hard work on unused ground seems silly now ive thought about it.

    thanks again

Mine are that long (give or take) but have absolutely no girth to them (they taste nice though).

How do I get them fatter next year? Would crow-bar-planting-holes help?

(Soil hasn't had much improvement done to it yet, although I assume I shouldn't Muck the Parsnip bed, or they will "fork")

Spadge it depends on what you want. If you want a chunkier parsnip, then make the hole about 4 or 5 inches across at the top. Kristen, same advice.:gnthb:

Mine will go in at the end of March judging by some of the variations I have seen across the different threads, I was wondering about pots for these as I have already mucked my soil. Read this thread about three days too late.
