I never have issues with slugs or snails on tomatoes, maybe as the nights are still too cool even in a greenhouse in my area, the plants weaken and that attracts the pests.

What sort of size were they, I wait till at least two trusses of flowers are open and tiny fruit visible, around 18" tall.

what a brilliant explanation and tip! Thank you very much

Ill order myself some empathy rootgrow - sadly just for next year though as all are out now, busy resisting today's squalls and missing the comfort of their coldframe.

I dont have space to keep all my seedlings until the size you suggest - the largest are about a foot high, the ones that succumbed a paltry 5 inches perhaps.

They were too small - I was too hasty. I think if last night hadn't been so wet I might have got away with it - as I have in other years. Well, you win some and you lose some. The rest are all fine.

Thanks @JWK for your help and thoughts :dbgrtmb:

Min temp 9.7 deg C last night in my garden, night before 11.1, but two much colder nights forecast before it'll be anything like that again, so holding back for a few days.

Hi. I’m a newby on here. I am growing toms in pots in an un-heated greenhouse. All my plants are between 12-18” and all have 3-4 trusses with flowers and in some cases tiny embryo fruit. They all look healthy with deep green leaves. The problem is, a couple of weeks ago the minimum temp in the greenhouse dropped to .8C, and night after night it was in single figures. I’ve noticed that they seem to have stopped growing. Any forecasts on if they’ll recover? Also in the past I’ve grown with a saucer under the pots. I’m wondering if it will make any difference if I remove the saucers. I’ll be grateful for any advice anyone can give me. I live near the coast in the north-east.

If they go a purple colour it indicates that its been too cold for them. As long as they weren't frosted and turned black they will sulk for a few weeks doing nothing before recovering.

I am holding mine back in a spare room for the time being, looking to plant in an unheated greenhouse this coming weekend , they need a minimum of 10C.

Keep the compost on the dry side, once chilled the roots stop working, if they then are in cold wet compost they can rot.

For those folk who have not planted yet and have plants in your house or even buy straight from a garden centre, make sure your plants are 'hardened off'. This process gently acclimatises them by moving them outdoors during the day. If not done the plants are shocked at the sudden drop in temperature and will stop growing for a week or two.

Normally I would plant out in mid May, but this year has been so cold mine will not be out by the usual time, as hardening off can only really start this week in my location.

Message for JWK, the seed saved from the plants I sowed from the seed you provided have germinated (sown a week ago). Alas I am 120 miles away at the moment, for a week or so, I've asked Carol to tend to them but wonder whether I'll return to disaster!
