My view is quite simple, if you want to have children then you must expect to pay for their upbringing.

Oh yes I agree Gemini,(I 've payed to bring up a lot of other peoples kids over the years), not so sure it should have been linked to income tax, and really should be linked to household income, but its a good move.
Another good one should be, to only pay out on the first two kids.

I think Child Benefit has to reformed, but it is pretty small beer in the scheme of things. There's an awful lot of stuff being bandied about concerning 'welfare scroungers' and also 'middle class' benefits (sometimes by me when I'm feeling fed up) but I think I'm right in saying that pensions make up about two-thirds of the benefits bill. As we're all living longer and increasingly finding that our pension schemes are better at extracting money than paying it out, personally I hope that people go on having children and that the kids actually manage to find jobs when they leave school. If some of them could be persuaded to go into geriatric medicine rather than media studies, that would be really good :).

Its made me laugh, listening to the Jeremy Vine show over the past few days & hearing how couples are struggling on £40k+ a year.

They want to try our income of £25K

Lol, another Daily Mail exclusive !

The ideology behind Child Benefit is sound, ideology is not always shared. It is however outdated.

The current rehash is a very poor effort, means testing an ideology doesn't work.

The whole Benefit system on a macro needs addressing and as such child benefit is a drop in the ocean. To attack Child Benefit at the micro level in a Daily Mail fashion is very dangerous and divisive. Punitive reform is rarely successful and only breads discontent. What you need is 'enabling' reform, which in actual fact is in part the very reason the original Child Benefit was created.

Yep I agree Ziggy and Paladin, 40K is a luxury! we are surviving on about 25K joint income with no help....not even family credit, because of a 10 year old cock up!

Tricky one, child benefit. On one hand, I ask why myself why I should pay for other people's children and their upbringing. On the other hand, those children will probably be the ones paying for my care in my old age!:D

The whole benefts system needs sorting out though, as others have already said. That and who is going to pay for an aging population.

So far it seems the Government have just been targetting poorer people, so it's about time they asked the better off to pay a bit more.

But why target people with kids? Why not just raise tax on the better off? Oh and can you ask the %$*&() bankers to pay a bit more please, since they got us into this mess in the first place!

Agree with Ali and others about £40k a year - if only!

I agree with you and Pete :yez:. I vote for pensions to go up. :old: :thumb: :)

Fortunately for us my parents left my sister and I a house. Mrs shiney and I are working our way through the inheritance, and our savings, so we can enjoy ourselves whilst we have the opportunity. :yho:
