The States have been having the same issues with shortage's of turkey's. From what I have heard, the shortage is mainly in smaller birds, due to people not allowed or not having big family gatherings due to covid, this caused a spike in demand for smaller birds, yet the demand for larger birds has shrank. It will not effect me as we will be having pork, not a turkey fan.

Fancy a staycation in North Wales? Fancy hiking up to the summit of Snowdon to enjoy the majestic views? Fancy a bit of solitude to consider the meaning of life?

I'm afraid that you will have to wait in line with everyone else:

I saw that on the news headlines on my computer earlier. Words fail me on the idiocy of the human race sometimes. Let alone the damage that all those trampling feet are creating.

Tourism is a blight on the land. Mountains with massive tracks all over them.Garbage dumped, bonfires, trees hacked down because the numpties think they are survivalists for the night.

                Cities ruined. Vienna,Barcelona,Edinburgh etc etc.
Areas like Cornwall turned in holiday destinations which are dead in winter because the locals cant live there anymore.
Cruise ships invading towns and cities damaging the balance of those economies too.
                7 Billion people........ 1 Earth.

Oh oh, I visited England a few years back and trampled @shiney Shineyland. Scattered Canuck baubles....

I'll never forget the look on a cashier's face during a conversation at a clothing shop in New Orleans. She asked me if I needed a certain type of receipt for my purchase so as to be able to get the local sales tax back because I was from Canada.

I told her, no thank you. The taxes covered tne costs of the sidewalks I've tread, the water I drank and a lot more when I used the lady's, the transit system I had used to get there and many other costs my presence nad incurred.

She was gobsmacked. She'd never heard that before. And if nothing else, I hope it impressed on her that not all tourists ignore the cost of their footprints.

And in my opinion, it is also up to those who encourage and profit from tourism, to be caring custodians of the heritage, etc of the venue.

If you sell a ticket to ride, then you take tne consequences.

And I try to tread, not trample!

                    Well said @CanadianLori

The situation is not quite such a simple thing. There are always excesses but tourism brings in a few hundred billion pounds and a couple of million jobs to the UK.

Wanted to pick up a 100mm x 100mm post to finish off the back archway - strictly speaking not really necessary - but it would make the arch look better.

As expected, prices have nigh doubled - but I thought - well, it's only this once - let's have a look and check the web site for stock.

Yep, you guessed it - none in stock locally. I'm not driving 70+ miles to get to the nearest store with 1 in stock - which probably won't be there when I arrive.

Change of plan then - front hedge trimming it is :dbgrtmb:.

That is a bit misleading. The lumber mills dramatically pumped up production to catch up with mid pandemic DIY demands and pushed up the prices so as to make record profits. Now that demand is slowing and since the mills didn't adjust their production to the lower demands, they are counting on using the forest fires to justify not reducing the prices because supposedly the fires will reduce their capacity to operate. They have lots of inventory. And need to sell it without inflated pricing. If, indeed, they have to cut down production, it is good as it works in lockstep with demand.

Now they are pushing the beetle story. Total horse hockey. Forests have endured one pestilence after another. Dutch elm, emerald ash, beetles, various caterpillars.

They'll dramatise anything that will fit their narrative in order to float prices at the falsely high levels they reached 6 months ago.

                        Pure greed.

And the fires are mainly due to the fact that the "greens" have essentially put a stop to controlled burns to create fire breaks. So a fire has zero obstacles, just miles and miles of trees to consume.

Very interesting and not a surprise really @CanadianLori, profiteering is usually at the root of many things. Evidently the prices for self catering establishments in the UK are mouth-wateringly expensive, taking advantage of people not holidaying abroad. They might regret this as when....eventually things return to some semblance of normality, people will remember being fleeced and won’t return. Win the battle but loose the war sort of scenario. Thank you for you local as it were knowledge.

I visited Yellowstone in the 80s in September, there was some snow on the ground.
Yellowstone had been on fire all summer that year, the place was just a mess and still smoldering.
It was mostly blamed on bad management and stopping natural burns for years which allowed buildup of dropped leaf litter to massive depths and impossible to extinguish.
