    Hi all,
We have an area of scrubland of about 1/3rd of an acre. We have mown a number of interconnecting paths through it and have used glyphosate on all the brambles, nettles & docks etc in the areas created between the paths. The plan is to spray any remaining weeds that emerge in spring, and then plant these areas with large grasses, bamboos and big perennial plants.

However, I need to dig an edge around all the mown paths to create an gap between the paths and the planted areas. Normally with a new border I would do this with a spade, however it is going to be an enormous job to do by hand.

Is there a machine that would cut into the ground and turn the soil over to one side?

    Any help appreciated. :)

    Thanks, Laura

Mini digger, or better still a 2 wheel tractor with 1 furrow plough.

Personally for this style of garden Id normaly edge the paths useing logs.

I think a turf cutter might do the job.

A turf cutter will struggle if the ground is rough or with roots. at best youll only remove a sod of 1.5" depth

To get them to work, in even good ground you need to stand on the back of them, One job were being a slender 11 stone of muscle is a disadvantage lol !!!

Thanks Paul. I have looked at the single furrow plough, but it looks like it turns the soil both ways instead of just to one side, is that right?
I did consider a turf cutter Claire, but it just undercuts a shallow strip of turf instead of a deep channel which is what I need.

The action of ploughing turns the soil in only one direction, One pass with the plough will acheive a furrow.

I will see if I can hire one locally.

At some point, when I have time, I will post pics of what we are doing on the Garden Projects thread. :)
