That picture kind of sums up C. "Cleopatra", John.
Purple leaves, purple and green, even sometime just green.
Red flowers, yellow flowers and yellow flowers spotted red.
And it all happens on the same plant.
I can't think of any other plant that does that.

Cleo is a chimera so it's got the DNA of two different plants, ie two sets of chromosomes. The bronze variant is more predominant and never seems to revert back to the green. Quite fascinating and unique as far as I know.

Only other plant I've heard of where this happens is a type of Laburnum which is crossed with a Cytisus.

There may be others but I think they are probably few.

Wyoming's wonderful, isn't it? A real thug, but stands anything the climate cares to throw at it :)

Well funny you should say that but I struggle with cannas in the ground, they like too much water.

They was showing the exotic garden area at Wisley, on TV, and making a comparison between how that was coping with the weather and how the rest of the place was.

Yes the exotic area looked great but they didn't mention how much water they must have been throwing at it.

Mmmm..my beds by the pool are needing a good soaking every three days, partly because I've replaced a lot of the original clay with 'topsoil' which dries to sand very quickly. The canna foliage looks good, though, even if they flower much better with lots of water :) The 'nana is doing much better since I brutally ripped out a swathe of Wyoming competing for space!
