Just bought my first house with my wife and we have a good sized garden to play with. Needs some work to bring it up to my standards... starting with the lawn which is presently laid to Astroturf (not my cup of tea).

Getting some quotes to have it laid to lawn... Will post about that on another part of the site.

Will also be looking for some advice on screening plants that aren't too deep. Look forward to contributing!

Welcome. My step-daughter has just gone the artificial turf route. Don't fancy it myself.

I'm a bit of a lawn snob - the outfield at Lord's being the (unattainable) mission. A mission which I suspect will be hampered by having a 1 year old with a growing penchant for digging things...

Welcome to the forum! If you have places where you're going to want gardens, you might want to think about it before getting the whole area sodded. Might save you money to have some areas "roped off" ?

And you can also reserve a place for a child's garden or sand box :)
