    Hi,

I am after about 40 or so hornbeams for a covered walk. Lots of places supply them at very good prices, but I can`t be making trade type purchases so need one that is reasonably ( cheaply) priced on line.

    Anyone know of anyone?

    I use

    http://store.ashridgetrees.co.uk/

for hedging. I don't know if they are "cheap", but they have always been very helpful and have plenty of plants etc., and I think you get a 5% discount if you order online.

However ... when you say "hornbeams for a covered walk" it depends a bit what you want / how big you want / etc.

Hedging plants at 60/80 cm are going to be about 60p each - but they are going to take a long time to make covered path!

Hedging plants at 150/175 cm will be about £ 3.30 each

Once you move up to Standard trees the prices jump:

A 6/8 std is £ 24.83 going up to a 10/12 std which is £62.70 each :o (for explanation of N/M sizing of standards Click Here)

An alternative you might consider is an avenue of pleached trees. Personally I think they are the dog's danglies!!!

Ashridge don't have any Hornbeam specifically trained for pleaching (and I'm not sure I would want to start with a bog standard Hornbeam Standard, as the branches are quite "upright" and would be hard to train), but they do have some "flat head limes" which are at the cheap-end of the ready-train-pleach-plants - £ 30.00 a throw, they need to be planted about 2m apart.

much depends on a) how rich you are / feel and b) how impatient you are!!

The InstaHedge guys do a somewhat-formed (don't kid yourself, they will look skinny, but if well looked after they will be impressive within a couple of years) plants for something like £ 185.00 for a 14/16 Std trained into a pleach format. You will still be needing to plant at about 2M centres.

Look at the adverts for hedging at the back of any of the gardening mags.

I've used Hopes Grove, and Buckingham.... both good, reliable and reasonably priced.
