The parent plant always dies. I usually cut the dead flower off but leave the 'pups'
to grow to at east 6" before carefully detaching them from the parent. This could be a good 6 months or longer. I cut the leaves of the parent back after flowering too. I think Aechmeas grow slower than Guzmanias.
The next generation may take 3 years or more to flower.

Yes, the fact that those beautiful blooms don't happen every year is a bit of a bummer. Will all the pups eventually flower or will some of them be 'duds'? And typically, how many pups do you usually get or does it differ wildly.

      Cyperus alternifolius - Umbrella grass,
I have a few of them and they've been outside for the summer so they look a bit scruffy, but I bring them in for the winter because Bella likes to chew them and there isn't much proper grass around then ...

This one is new and the buds were on it when I bought it, but my previous one (which died) took several years before it produced a flower and then it did so every year (until it died)

I think they need really strong sunlight to initiate flowering, I've got a few very neglected plants of Stapelia varigata?, as I call it, hanging around and they flower most years.

We have what I thought are Cyperus but I'm not sure now so I shall have to ask Mrs Shiney as she grows them for her flower arranging. They grow in a number of areas in the garden and survive the harshest winters.

I have left them out in the past and they are quite hardy here, but they die back a bit. I bring them indoors for Bella to chew because there isn't much grass in the garden in the winter.

We had one for many years here as T'other Half liked it), then things got moved about (not me) and it died. He doesn't understand sun/shade, water heavily/water lightly, :doh:It is often gone before I notice. :frown:

Mrs Shiney said that ours are Cyperus and they are certainly hardy. We have them growing in a few areas in the garden and they spread like mad. We dug up six the other week and took them to the charity garden centre. She uses them all the time in flower arrangements. Some spread through into the tarmac driveway and we keep pulling them out.

I would say that too, but on the 'net' it is said to be hardy down to 5C. Maybe it depends how sheltered the site is.

                          C. alternifolius is really quite hardy but does die back in frost.
Its one of those plants that if you look in old books it will tell you its tender, it probably was very tender in 1963.;)

Yeah, if you want it for Bella to chew I think you need to keep it frost free, but I find it root hardy, basically herbaceous after a good frost.
