On the way home from the hospital the other day, came accross an unuasual hedge in a front garden. It had little yellow fruits on it which were pumpkin shaped. I managed to take a fruit that had gone to seed. Has anybody any idea what it might be. 02

Hiya 02, was it an ornamental gourd maybe, they come in all shapes and sizes but are rarely very big. Try this link http://www.wuvie.net/ornagourds2.jpg , if it doesn't work, try a search for ornamental gourd image, cheers T.D.
P.S. It's not a hedge but it may have climbed up through a hedge as they are climbers like cucmbers etc.

Hi Digger, This was definately a hedge, I dont know if it is meant to be a hedge, maybe the owners could have trained in to grow that way. It was literally covered in these little yellow fruits approx 2 inches in diameter. Very eye catching. 02

Was it prickly? Poncirus something or other is the hardy pomegranate, that has small yellow fruit.

Of course there is the obvious answer. How about a Cydonia japonica? (Quince)They make a lovely hedge and the fruit does go yellow when ripe. Easy to tell, have a sniff at the fruit. they smell beautiful (best room freshener there is!).

Ive looked up quince as you suggested and it is very similar but the fruits weren't pear shaped they were rounder somehow and wrinkled. 02

True Quince fruits are pear shaped, but the ones on Chaenomeles japonica can be almost any rounded shape and when they are very ripe they are wrinkled. (Bit like the rest of us!)

It's amazing how few people recognise the quince! My friend gave away all her fruit because she thought it was poisonous and her neighbour made some wonderful jelly..........The flowers are pretty too.......
