@Balc thought this current magazine Q&A might interest you, know it rerlates to w8.1 to W10 but it might still apply to W7, worth a look ...

Will there ever become a time when computers become user friendly, I doubt it, much better to keep an industry of clever people that the likes of me have to rely on to just get the bloody thing to work half decent.
Not getting at anyone on here, but its about time things just got easier instead of all this mystery.

That's why I have my son attached to the other end of Teamviewer Pete. My new laptop is almost a week old and still not in use. I need his technological brain to set it up for me. Hopefully on Sunday.

            Hi Sheal,

As mentioned earlier, a new laptop often comes with loads of Bloatware that can be a bit overwhelming at first and the newer style of Windows11 can be off putting to some.

Am sure your son will help sort out a lot of things for you, but would suggest you be a bit braver and start it up and get a bit familiar of the new look.

You may get Microsoft and HP telling you to register and sign in etc etc, but that can usually wait a bit, just navigate around the main menu and looking for things you recognise and are familiar with. Just a few short session of 20 -30 mins at a time so you do not get tired of it.

Any particular problem , just ask , plenty of help here as well.

Am sure you will soon get into the swing of things and be wondering how you managed on you old laptop !

Thanks @ricky101. I've spent a number of hours getting used to the set up and finding my way around. I've altered basics like cursor set-up, background, scrolling etc. and have set up Teamviewer ready for my son tomorrow. I have never understood computer jargon and would never be able to set the whole thing up myself.

I think I've said before anything technological is mostly beyond me but give me something mechanical and I'll be able to work with that. :)

@ricky101 do you think I could put the HDD from this (old) PC in the new one, as a slave drive? Will the old OS (Win7) "fight" against the new one (Win 11)? I slaved a new HDD once in an older computer but it was blank & so there were no problems.

While I'm at it, do you know how to format the HDD in Win11 so that the OS stays in its own partition & the rest of the disc would be for my files? I've read about this but have never tried it for myself.

One more thing - sorry! Do you know if it is possible to uninstall the OS Win7 from my old PC & use the space for my files?

I would copy the files I wanted to keep from the old drive to the new drive, format the old drive, and then move the files I just want to store back to the old, reformatted drive. The computer only looks for the OS on the drive the BIOS directs it to so the Windows 7 will not interfere.

Is there any point in getting a new laptop with windows 10 on it?
                    Just asking, I know nothing.

To me once I stop using a PC or Laptop its the end of the road, anything I want to keep would go on an external hard drive which I can then access from my new PC.

                      Hi Pete,

It depends, most PCs / laptops sold these days have W11, but some older stock still have W10.
The key thing is that if it has W10, can it be updated to W11 ?
Thats down the the hardware fitted and most vendors clearly state it can be updated to W11 for free.
If they do not make that clear in writing then its probably very old stock that is unable to run W11 due to the incompatible old hardware, and should not be a good buy as W10 will soon be obselete and no further security patches will be made by Microsoft.
