I planted a row of Dahlia tubers some 4 weeks ago placed at a depth of 4inches with fresh compost so far nothing is showing, is this normal ?

You are probably a bit early, depending on where you are.
To be honest you dont want them surfacing until the last frost which could be May in some parts of the UK.
Id be surprised if you see anything for at least another month to 6 weeks.

Agree with @pete, if you want to start them early you can do this in pots in greenhouse or window sill. Any dahlias left in the ground are covered in a thick layer of mulch so they stay warm until weather hot enough for them to start to shoot. Normally May. Fabulous you are growing dahlias @JOHNBHOY

Fabulous @Spruce, lovely ones you have there. I have Cafe Rose this year out of your list. Crème de Cognac is going to have to go on my next list, what a beauty.
My favourite is Verrone’s Obsidian and all those single, star and anemone for pollinators but I also have loads of dinner plate ones to pick for vases and leave outside too. Oh and some cactus and water lily types and decorative……. I get most from Peter Nyssen too as prices always reasonable. Have over 140 more this year, possibly more, can’t face counting. started in greenhouse or sitting in boxes whilst I work out how they will all fit on the greenhouse floor as staging full. Several will have to go out direct in May I think.
A few more from Sarah Raven this year as only she has them (Rosie Raven, Abigail and more Molly Raven)
Turns into an obsession doesn’t it but a good one!

And dahlias really do supply that. I have loads of cosmos too as that flowers till first frost as well.

We can swap photos when they are all in bloom perhaps. Would love to see your Creme De Cognac, and the others. Really bright and colourful.

Loads of dahlias potted up and shooting but I just cannot wait!

Just looked at a few more from last year and now desperate to see them in bloom.
                  Bet we all are.

Right, that's enough. Will stop looking now and look forward to this year :hapfeet::biggrin:

Morning @CarolineL, second one is Blue Bayou. Bees love it. There is a new one called Abigail which is slightly darker. Sure is tempting isn’t it.
