I can't remember where on GC there is a thread about rescue chickens but I thought I would put up this warning.

A friend of ours has been looking after rescue chickens for many years but has just been seriously injured by one of them. When she was bending down put some feed for them one of them jumped up and pecked her in the eye. The eyeball has been penetrated in two places.

When she was at the eye unit they said that this is not an unusual occurence - they think that they go for eyes because they are shiny. Apparently it happens more with rescue chickens than others and this may be because they are unsettled.

So please be careful with them.

Jee, sometimes it pays wearing glasses all day! Be indeed careful around any animal. Even when they mean no harm they don't always know what they are doing. Hope your friend gets better and no lasting damage was done!

Oh thats a nasty thing to happen, ditto what Ivory said about your friend getting better.

The rescue chicken thread was titled Ex-bats or something similar.

I don't know about rescue chicken, but ordinary chicken can also be dangerous, especially cockerels, and they don't always move away if you for example wave a tree branch at them (as i have been doing once).

Chickens will go for eyes, its only instinct to peck at something shiny and moving (they have excellent eye sight).

As for vicious cockerels-yep, they can be evil little beggars. They're only defending their harem, but they can do real damage with their spurs and beak. Sometimes, sunday lunch is the only option-there are too many mild mannered cockerels out there to keep a nasty one.

:euw:Shiney that sounds nasty.I always thought that hens were nice sociable creatures though I knew that the cockerals could be nasty.

I had to read what you had put quickly because I hate anything to do with eyes:euw: I do hope that your friend makes a reasonable recovery:)

Hope your friend recovers with no lasting effects, shiney. Nasty accident. I can understand her being worried.

Health and Safety tip from a Health and Safety Advisor (me!) - for that reason ALWAYS wear surrounding safety specs like these when dealing with sharp, pointed beak birds. Canaries aren't too bad, but anything bigger, best to be safe. You can get ones similar to this quite cheaply in B&Q

A few years ago MrsT was attacked by a cockerel and she ended up in bed for a week with Bacillus poisoning and a course of very strong antibiotics. Very nasty.
