Hi everyone and thanks for taking the time to read this. I need some advice please.

I'd like to grow 3 or 4 perinnial herbs together in my window box. I'd like to grow oregano, chives, thyme and rosemary together but it might be a bit of a squeeze, so 3 might be better?

My window box is 18" long, 6" wide & 5" deep. Is this adequate? I plan to start with growing herbs not seeds. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Please see attached picture and many thanks in advance.

The rosemary will grow far bigger and faster than the others, but apart from that I reckon it'll be fine.

Thanks for that. Maybe trimming will keep it from overwhelming the others.

I think if you use it regularly it won't get chance to get too big too quickly.

    Is that a sunny window?
They will need good light to grow well.

The window faces east/southeast. My amaryllis are on a same side facing window and they bloom every year. Do you think this will be sufficient? This is them in the morning.

Well, yes as long as you get some sunshine on that window.

Ok great, thanks again. I suppose the herbs placed on the left will get slightly more light throughout the day.

Do you happen to know if these herbs require about the same amount of light? I'm thinking the ones that need the most should be planted on the left for slightly more light throughout the day.

I think rosemary and thyme both really like lots of sunshine.
I think you might be alright short term, but they are all plants that prefer out door growing conditions.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. I'd really like my herbs to be good long term. I don't have a garden though.

Can you recommend any other perinnials that would be better suited for window growing?

Chives and oregano are still OK yeah?

Well, don't let me put you off trying those you like.
It's often an experiment and we don't know until we try.
Just thought it was worth a mention.

Ok thanks again. If anyone else has any opinions on what perinnial herbs are best suited to window growing please let me know.

Have yourself a good day pete ✌️

Hi @JJmac , welcome to the forum!

Your herb plan is great, it's brilliant to have fresh herbs right at hand when you are cooking. Your choice of Oregano, Thyme and Rosemary sounds good, but I'd keep Chives in a separate pot. Chives tends to die down in winter.

Be prepared for Aphids though. :gaah: I give my windowsill herbs a soapy water wash weekly which is easy as they are in individual pots inside a long decorative planter. This way it's also easy to swap things around when something stops looking good.

A small growlight will help in the winter and I kind of like the light in dark nights. Mine are cheapy ones and have a timer, Amazon has several options. Choose a natural light, not the purple one that tends to bring the police to your door. :heehee:

In the summer I also grow several pots of softer herbs we use a lot, such as Basil and Parsley. Once one potful is eaten it goes to garden to re-grow and a replacement is brought in. A kind of herby rota.

Have you considered a miniature chilli? The plants look nice with the colourful fruit and grow well on windowsill.

Keep us posted on your plans please :)

Hi and thanks for the detailed reply.

So your saying yes to the oregano, rosemary and thyme but no to the chives. I don't know much about aphids but is there another perinnial I can use to keep them away such as mint or lavander?

I really want something low maintenance, perinnial and no need to artifical light but thanks for the info.
