I thought I had found the perfect tree, suitable in a pot, full sun, water well, but it really doesn’t look happy! It is Cercis rising sun, any suggestions before I move it?

It doesn't look very happy even Lower down, is it really yellow or is that the light in the picture.
Did it flower, was it there all last winter.

I don't think that type of tree support is a good idea for long term use on a tree. They are sold like that but I think this support is only meant to be for short term use. The ties look like they might be a bit too tight and if the top is not free to sway a bit in the wind then the tree is unlikely to move enough to establish a proper strong trunk. If you take the ties off and there are signs they have been too tight that could be the problem.

Otherwise it might be an issue with the roots in the pot and it may require taking it out of the pot to check on them. Was the root ball unraveled before being put in its current pot as if it was pot bound they may not be spreading out properly in the new container? Not sure from the photo if that is the label still attached to the plant but if it is I have found even these can damage the plant if left on long term and it should be removed. Moving it to somewhere more shaded may help it recover and I have found plants get used to one amount of light and can get seriously knocked back when this is suddenly changed.

    Happy gardening!

Thank you for your replies, I bought it just over a month ago and repotted making sure we loosened the roots, the leaves had gone see through then the top started withering

i will remove the supports and ticket and move to the side garden that isn’t full sun *fingers crossed*

I wonder if it's in a windy spot? Going by the leaf loss above the fence level. Is it an exposed site? Maybe the recent cold winds have caught it, and it came straight from a nursery with protection.

If I move to a more sheltered place do you think it may recover?

I can't say if it is the same there, but here they grow wild in very exposed situations, often on roadsides, barely have any water.

Here is mine in March blooming but no leaves as they bloom before they leaf.

Looking at the “stats” before buying it seemed like it would sit well where it is ‍♀️

i suppose I wondered if I should give it a chance to adapt to its new surroundings or move it in case of irreparable damage

As it's in a pot I think that's the best option.

I think it's as John pointed out, the plant had been coddled on a nursery and then suddenly getting put in full sun and strong winds.
You can definitely see where the part above the fence has been dried right out.

I was thinking you had, had it longer and it was in that position all winter.
Once acclimatise it should be fine in that position.
