Nor mine, I don't kow if any have flowered here as most have only been planted in the last 10 years. They need the warmth and sun that our climate just does not get.:(

Lol, do you have any P. Dactylifera, the true Date Palm around your area?

Oh, pete and strongy .... you have no faith in global warming ..... :lollol::lollol::lollol:

To be perfectly honest, strongy I don't know but will check into this and then look around. Sis seems to think these are the ones that dates are created from but we say 'no way'!

But, I must say they are very impressive! :thumb:

Unfortunately this is the species with that disease we've discussed earlier this year and one of our friends has lost two in the three months they have been back in the UK ..... still VERY worrying ....... s00k

Lol, the difference between the two is that the Date palm has a grey green apperance instead of the rich green of the CIDP, they are more commonly seen in the hotter end of the Med through to Pakistan. I have two nippers 3 ft high and in pots too only plastic ones.:)
Any fully grown Phoenix is a fantastic sight particularly with flower or fruit, they have such a majestic arching habit.:thumb:

Strange thing, in Turkey and Cyprus the American Washingtonia is more commonly planted than the European Phoenix. In the US (from what I saw) the Phoenix is planted more than the American Washingtonia.

By the way, the pic was taken with me sitting in the car today .... do I dare say topless .... :)

We all like to grow something not native strongy:)

i tend to think the true date palm is less ornamental than CIDP

You see that in a lot of places LoL.
Can only think that palm roots go straight down and dont affect building foundations like broadleaved trees.
Just out of intrest I have a smallish plant of phoenix theophrastii, Cretian date palm, cant say its that good looking though, and a bit spikey.

The Phoenix canariensis planted in Southsea (near Portsmouth) ten years ago not only flowered but has set viable seed. See here
