I'm wondering if anyone has had experience of painting uPVC windows and doors.
I was thinking of having a different colour on my pottery-making/craft shed (formerly old garage)
because white always looks dirty to me.

I don't know how effective it would be - is it easy to paint on, would the colour last or peel off, and any other information would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

We painted some of our upvc panels on the porch and garage the other year using one of the many upvc primers.

Cannot see the one we used listed any more, though there are many others , but not the cheapest of paints.

They go on like any normal undercoat and then we used a typical exterior oil based gloss and so far they look fine, we only used white to match the exisiting wood paintwork.

If you look on the web there are lots of examples of painting upvc frames etc. cannot see it beiong a problem if you use a decent primer.

I spray-painted the white uPVC window frames on our UK house many years ago. Considering the (shameful) lack of preparation, it worked very well. Just a proprietary paint for plastic, it still looked good when we sold the house 25 years later. It's a faff masking off carefully, but worth it as spraying gives a more even finish than painting.

I've spray painted plastic fittings, recently a bath side panel that had gone yellow with age. Spray gives a good shiney finish so it looks like new. I haven't tried a brush but would imagine a door would show the brush strokes, plus a lot of masking with good quality tape is needed (goes for spraying as well as brushing). Trouble with spraying outdoors is needing a still dry day.

Do you need to finely abrade the surface in order to create a key for the paint to stick.
Is the paint used on plastic water based.

Thank you for the advice. However I would have to buy a thing to spray it with and I'd never use it again so I think a brush will do. It's only the old garage and can hardly be seen, so doesn't matter as much as if it was the house.

I didn't explain very well :) I used aerosol paint canisters. Probably not the most economical way to go about it, although as you say Michael, you'd need special equipment to use big cans so it perhaps evens out. I wiped the frames down but didn't sand them. The adhesion was good :blue thumb:

Thank you @noisette47 ... I was going to use the uPVC special paint but we'll see. I'll think about it.

I have used this undercoat /primer on my front door several times ,I used to paint it same colour as my car as I changed it (talking point)
Any paint will adhere to it with minimal preparation.
