Is it a lesser periwinkle? Roughly what is its size?

I just googled the periwinkle. Its similar, but i dont think its the same.Could of course be a different version of the same family though.
Size....about the size of a pansy, the stem though was long.Dont ask,it headed down amoungst the undergrowth.
I could guess at about 6 inch, maybe a little more

My Collins says of it-if it helps, Vinca minor, that the petals are twisted round to the left of the bud, top 5 stamens which alternative with the petals have hairy tips and there is a tuft of white hairs at the tip of the style.

Vinca Major, is a larger plant with bigger flowers, with the sepals edged by long hairs.

However it is flowering outside of it`s usual time with this one, so it`s down to Dai or Ivory on this one I reckon.

Maybe, an outside chance of it being an escapee hybridised phlox? Was it aromatic, and the size of a pansy-do you mean a winter ( American I think) one, or one of the Native smaller ones?

:) Try Phlox ... I may be wrong, but... There are several kinds.. Flowers look right & colour too.. Even the leaves & stems are right shape size & colour.. They self seed quite easily as well which could be how yours got into the wild... In flower now.. Have a look here
You can see them here too Do they smell at all??

Must dash now but will look in later:wink:

They look very similar,as did the periwinkle things.
However, those Phlox look to be in a bunch type affair, where those that i found were a group of 5 or 6 spread out over aprox 1 square meter. The ground was wet and boggy in places, the flowers were though on a hillock, and they were under trees,so i'd say at best more shade than sun.
As for smell.....i didnt notice anything, but certainly didnt stick my nose in them.

As soon as I saw it I thought of Campion (Silene) which is about the right size and flowering now, but not sure about the leaves.

:) I thought of Campions Silene first too LoL, but they have hairy stems & leaves & they flower up to end of July...!!!! That was how come I moved on to self seeded Phlox.... I have been althrough my bible noe & the only other thing I can come up with is, Indian Balsam impatiens glanduliferea that flowers well into October, but the floweres don't look right for that either.. I am still coming back to the Phlox...... I found this about the Phlox & where it likes to live...
Have a look at THIS pic

 Are we any nearer do you think..????:D

i think you've hit the nail on the head there Marley.
