Acers are reputed to prefer shade and shelter, so an open position in (possibly) full sun, together with dryness at the roots, could have caused the leaf browning. If the tree has to stay in that position, someone needs to keep an eye on the watering through the summer in dry periods.
As for the trunk, it looks too neat to be recent damage by an animal. Deer, hares and rabbits all nibble bark. It looks to be healing OK, so best to just put a fairly rigid, mesh tree-guard around trunk and stake to prevent any further damage. It needs to come to just under the first branches.

I have several Acers in my garden and as the nights draw in and temperatures start to fall, the leaves begin to go brown and fall off. I've noted that the purple leaf varieties tend to brown earlier than the green leaf varieties. Nothing to worry about in my opinion.

It's a pity really as some Acers colour up really well in the autumn and if they are going brown now you will mostly miss that.

We have a huge one out in our back area. been there for years. Yes, we have shade and that thing makes babies, each spring I see lots of new ones popping up here and there. Mostly I pull them out and toss them.

There's always next year, though :) Forewarned is forearmed, so Martyn's sis will know to keep it well-watered during dry spells and to perhaps put a parasol over it during heatwaves  I know how frustrating Acers can be. I desperately wanted to grow A. palmatum dissectum by the pond in Northants but ended up having to grow it in a pot by the back door where no-one ever saw it :roflol:
