Do you all make or have made Kellogg's Rice Krispie Treats?
I made some about 30 years ago, and don't really make them hardly
BUT, about 2 years ago while we were up fishing for Salmon in British Col. they provided packed lunch on the boat, had a rice krispie treat in it, BUT they had mixed in dried fruits in it. Since then it sort of haunted me. So finally I put my mind to it. Looking at the traditional ingredients, and nutrition content, I changed it up a bit. If you look at rice krispies they themselves have lots of sugar in them, then there is the marshmallows--again sugar, then the dried fruits again a form of sugar. Checking the cereal area, I found the Puffed Wheat to be a good substitute for the Rice.
So here is my first combination. And it turned out great, not to sweet, just right. And it looks pretty, with the colorful fruits and the green pumpkin seeds. The puff wheat gives it a earthly quality.

    Quaker-Puffed Wheat
    Marshmallows
colorful mixed small cut dried fruits
    whole almonds
    chopped peanuts
    Salted pumpkin seeds
    sesame seeds
    3 tablespoons of butter

I have to admit I'm still making the both the Kelloggs' Cornflakes and Rice Krispies cakes with all the naughty 'stuff' in and have done so ever since I was a young'un both our boys enjoy them still even though they are 20 and 24 needless to say none of the cakes goes to waste!

I have not tried mixing nuts and dried fruit in them now that does sound nice but I'm afraid there will still have to be room for the chocolate....yummy, yum, yum!:luv:Hel.xxx.

Am an avid rice crispie cake and cornflake cake maker. With marshmallows and cookie bits and chopped cherries and things! Nomnomnom. Its sort of expected from me at parties, mum brings the salady stuff, Jo brings potato salad, Nan makes the ultimate lemon drizzle cake and i make chocolate rice crispie cakes or cornieflake cakes and the birthday cake!

Not sure how i feel about a healthy option, its just not naughty enough. I feel too sensable.

Plus it would literally murder my aunt, who is allergic to nuts. Death in a cupcake case right there.

Scotkat, you can add anything you want to it. Thats just it, its my first deviant from the norm.
    The basic recipe is:
3 tbs. butter, 10oz. marshmallows and 6 cups of puffed rice. I am just substituting one or two cups of the dry part (puffed rice) with other yummies. Like you can cut up snicker bars, or mallow bars, or carmels, or put in white chocolate bits. Or just dried cherries. But the main thing is using the Puffed Wheat instead of the traditional Rice Krispies due to sugar content.
Its like an experiment in a bowl. I am going to throw together some more this weekend.
