Can anyone suggest what I can plant to put goodness back into the soil where I grew potatoes this year? I gather that some plants are useful for replacing nutrients which others take out. I'm new to veg this year, so I want to get the best out of the plot and do it right. I'm also waiting for some winter veg plants to arrive - sprouts, broccoli - should I avoid this season's potato area and put them at the other end of the patch?

Plant a green manure then dig it in in spring a few weeks before u plant your veg. U can get these from most of the online seed stores. I'm using Phacelia from Marshalls seeds :)

Your Sprouts and Broccoli should be fine in the same area but you shouldn't plant any root crops in that area for 2 years (Beetroot, Carrot, Chicory, Artichoke, Parsnip, Potato, Salsify) but any of the other groups (Brassicas and others) will be fine.

Try planting Cabbage, Cauliflower, Radish, Turnip and Swede along with the Broccoli and Sprouts and rake in some general fertiliser about 2 weeks before sowing.

    Hope this helps,

    Chas.

Thanks Chas and LMRR - I've got my brassicas in for the winter and also ordered some Phacelia to put in the other half of the plot to prep it for next season.
