    Hello there, first post.

No, this not the title for a new Netflix movie or a concept for an episode of Black Mirror (although I would imagine the latter would be quite cool, the plants are finally fighting back!).

    Anyway, I digress.

For years now, I've had these bushes emerge in the front garden, containing these long-stranded leaves, which are sharp, and very strong as you get to the roots. I usually just snip them now and again, but in the past have tried getting rid of them (at one point even trying to use a small fire, but this is quite dangerous).

What would you all suggest? As I'm afraid I'm already out of ideas...

    Kind regards.

Difficult to identify cut so low, at first sight it looks like an ornamental grass. Does it produce flowers in the summer?

I couldn't make it out either, my thoughts went to those sedge like weeds that come up from time to time, if it's not ornamental I'd dig it out.

With out seeing flowers/seed heads it's hard to be sure, but could be Jobs Tears (Coix lacryma jobi) if it is then terminate with extreme prejudice. napalm is acceptable as is "Agent Orange"; it is a nasty spready thing that will cut your hands to pieces given half a chance; it nearly took over a friends garden.
More seriously dig it out and into the council green waste bin.

Don't think it's Coix and, at first, thought it may be one of the Cyperus family but am changing my mind on closer examination.

          Hi all

Appreciate the quick responses. Nothing flowers from these in the summer, and having googled some of the suggestions thus far, I can confirm the google image results don't match what it looks like when fully grown, but the description of Jobs tears is quite accurate in itself.

Texture-wise, they're quite strong. One would never pull these without gardening gloves on as you'd essentially get a paper cut.

This is also why I snip them so low as unfortunately they can't be de-rooted, unless perhaps machinery were being used.

I've zoomed in on the original res image and taken a screenshot, and perhaps more may be gleaned. Notice that there are indentations along the leaf itself, and when they're fully grown, they basically wave downwards as you'd expect.

Although I'm going to perhaps settle for Jobs Tears. The plant that is.

          Thanks again!

My money's on Carex pendula. A very good case for not banning Glyphosate!

Whatever it is, just let it grow next spring and around late May spray it with glyphosate, it might need a couple of treatments, but it will kill it in the end.

Carex pendula. A pain in the seating area to get rid of as the little (insert choice swearword here) self seeds into the most inaccessible areas. As Noisette says, glyphosate....or C4....personal choice

It probably has flowers you might not recognise as such, Carex pendula has flowers like this:

Apologies everybody I had a bit of a brain fart earlier and it was Carex pendula I was talking about, everything above still applies.
C4 good idea; but Londoners, especially the uniformed kind, tend to be nervous with loud bangs.

                      The sharp edges suggest Pampas.
