When do people typicallly sow aubergine? Same time as toms or a bit earlier? It's been quite a while since I've grown some and am wanting to do a few this year

I might put a few seeds in in March, I dont have the heating and lighting necessary to grow them on this early.

I have lights but really don't want to Molly coddle seedlings for a couple of months so I'll sow mine in march too

I've never done well with Aubergines so not qualified to give advice. Am having one last go this year. I plan to sow a couple of weeks after my toms, that will be late march.

                .
Good to see them growing so well! Do you grow them under growlights? They look quite sturdy!

Last time I grew them about five years ago I got barely any from two plants. I think I'll try two this year and put them in pots in the greenhouse as the soil in them warms up a lot more than the beds in the greenhouse

They're on a sunny windowsill during the day, then brought away from the window when I close the curtains at night. They have grow lights on them, too.

Fat Frog looking happy, but none of the other seeds direct sown came up. Will try again on paper. 20240208_023629.jpg

Had some seeds from a cheese plant fruit and did them in the boiler cupboard, rapid germination! Heat seems key for many seeds. Not sure what ill do with it lol

I've had very mixed fortunes with aubergines over the years. I wouldn't bother with the bigger fruited ones again, but the minis did okay. Best results have been from the little round orange ones but unfortunately I didn't care for the taste.

EDIT. I caved and sowed a couple of Baby Belle F1 aubergines and a pinch of ground cherry seeds.

I have some (cheap) growlights and since having those I've started my Aubergines between mid Jan and mid Feb. Seems to work and get a decent amount of pickable fruit (depending on variety) from around early July. I started even earlier this year.
I've only grown once without the lights, and sowed them in mid march that year.
I did get fruit then too - but it was much later - early Sep I think.

Is there any varities of tomatoe worth growing outside in the UK? Im in NI so lots of rain (definitely blight country!) and where i am specifically is a little higher up and pretty windy. We a big old style conservatory that would roast you in the summer so considering that. What do yous grow them in when indoors? Pots or those grow bags?
