    Ewwwwww:heehee:
I wouldn't touch tomatoes until my 30's, love them now, snot and all:heehee: grow my tumblers every year and as others have said a there's nothing like a freshly picked tomato for flavour.

I have to be careful with tomatos, as I suffer with colitus. I do find that they vary so much, and in line with several comments on this thread, to me. There are, tomatos and tomatos.

Well friends. Many, many thanks for your sharing this thread. I am sure that a researcher would derive so much information about your gardening preferences.

Perhaps the main point was covered with my Dear friend. (Tut tut, can't think of his name). So why do you grow Roses. That has to be a pivitol point. We do what we do, because we like it. Therefore our likes are then boosted to improving matters and building upon our experiences.

A particular point cropped up often. Growing your own, stepping into the garden and picking fresh etc. Perhaps most important. The stuff I grow. Tastes so much better than shop bought.

So friends. Simple question. WHY? As you all know despite being long retired. I remain close to scientific organizations etc. Especially plant sciences. Now then. So much has been done in the scientific realms, especially to increase crop produduction and and all of that. Even now, this has failed as there are more and more of the worlds population starving.

As members have stated. Home grown produce tastes best.. WHY?

OK lets take a look. Here on GC. We have members employed in all branches of society. The butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker. How many of us have professional, scientific degrees etc. Yet! despite the now vast and varied list of supermarket produce. Why does my back garden veg taste better??

Once again friends. Many thanks. Perhaps you may like to continue this thread. Enjoy your gardening.

Unique description. :hate-shocked: I have always deseeded tomatoes as I dislike the seeds and core but I am okay with cherry toms intact. May have come from doing stuffed tomatoes where you have to hollow them out. One of the Hairy Bikers (David Myers) is the same.

I also cannot abide the pith in peppers and remove ALL of it, bitter stuff, yuk.

I like yellow tomatoes as they are less acidic which is supposed to be better for arthritis. They are mellow not tangy, not sure if they less bad for colitis.

I used to grow a few different ones many, many moons ago but stopped for some reason?
Probably for the fact I used to 'graze'!
I also used to save the seed from shop bought toms. Yes, I know some could've been f1's and not true to type, but they seemed to do ok.
It's the taste that makes home grown so good, not the money or time involved.
Why do people insist on growing roses(spit)? They take far more looking after than a lot of other stuff. They have disease, pests, thorns and an insatiable need for food....a bit like a few people I know! Correct pruning needed as well, but you get a variety with perfume, you understand why

A plum tomato which I grow has very few seeds in comparison to the more usual varieties.

Any recipes for pumpkin jam that you would raccomend?
My punpkins are not likely to grow large, but they should be enough for some jars :)

Aido I can give you a recipe for apricot and pumpkin jam , pumpkin and pineapple or plain old pumpkin jam .

It's asked , why grow tomatoes etc
                  These are my reasons

just popping out to the supermarket isn't a choice for everybody .just popping out would take us at least 3 hours and that is without the divertions that we now have .we don't have anything local ....not even a farm shop never mind a supermarket.
It's a necessity to grow as much of our own fruit and veg as possible
                  But
I prefer tasty nonacidic tomatoes in colours of a true orange ,purple , black, pink, yellow, chocolate , green ( zebra ) tigrella and beefsteak .
                  They all taste different too.

It annoys me when I hear comments that they are low priced in supermarkets etc
yes of course they are , and tasteless too.
If I'm paying for tomatoes i want a tomatoe taste .
My cucs , aubergine , melons are tasty too.
As regards the capsicum s I grow many different ones. This year I've had 30 capsicum from just one seed..and it's still fruiting. So this works out better than shop bought for me.( Seed was 2 year old I keep it in the fridge.)
                  So supermarkets 3 for 75p a bargain???
a plant will continue replacing fruit , for me mine's a better bargain.
I grow for the interest and taste, Id rather nip out and pick my fruit and salad crops as I need them
                  But each to his own.

But isn't that what gardening is ?
                  Rant over.

If I had the time energy and land I would grow much more veg but in the limited space I have I find that tomatoes are well worth it for the flavour which you can only get with the more expensive supermarket toms. Sweet peppers however I just can't get good results and we eat a lot so I have given them up. Salads are the most worth growing and last winter we had home grown lettuce most days however this winter they damped off. I don't like chillies!!
In my one veg bed I alternate sweetcorn and snap peas / runner beans plus a Crown Prince squash and and I grow Tromboncino against the garage wall. As I grow few of each the seeds last several years. 2 things which I will always grow now are huauzontle and yakon. You have to start them off in the greenhouse but they are both pest free for me.

In the past I grew less veg, mostly flowers, but now I just find growing food very satisfying!

There are quite a few edible flowers that you could grow, and many herbs have 'interesting' flowers that not only give colour to your veg patch but also attract pollinaters who will visit your flowering veg to mutual advantage.
