This is an indoor Rose plant I bought my late mum last year, in the last week the leaves have suddenly turned yellow, I’ve only been giving it a little water….. does anyone know what’s wrong with it ?

I’m not a rose expert, so we’ll need to await the thoughts of someone better informed than me, but I’m wondering if it’s lack of light over the winter, which has finally caught up with it? I think roses need quite a lot of light.

You said you haven’t been overwatering it, but you can confirm this by getting the plant carefully out of the pot and seeing if the soil looks soggy. Even a moderate amount of water could have accumulated in the bottom over the winter, when the plant needs much less water, especially if the drainage isn’t good enough.

looking at the roots is always a good idea if a plant is struggling. So also check for any bugs/grubs or anything else that looks suspicious. If in doubt, post another picture of the roots.

Or it could be a nutrient deficiency.

Thankyou, I’ve had it sat on the windowsill in the kitchen, I will check the roots and take a photo and also check for bugs too :dbgrtmb:

Do you think it might want to be outside? I had one bought me for my birthday last August, I put it outside when it finished flowering, and promptly forgot it. I've now rediscovered it and it's doing quite well. I see there were three plants in the pot, 2 have rotted away and died. Will be taking care and potting it up later.

I'll be following this thread with interest. :)

I remember you buying this Flumpy. I know zero about Roses ... but I think a rose is a rose and wants to be outside. In saying that, I have never been able to keep these mini roses, last year had a green one. Maybe @wiseowl can help?

All roses need to be outside, even when they sell them as an indoor plant. Has the pot got drainage holes?
I'd put it closer to the light and gradually get it accustomed to going outside. I can't see if all of the stems are green but I'd take all of the yellow leaves.

All stems are still green at the moment :)

Roses are deciduous and should be coming into new leaf about now. If those ones have been on there all winter, they might finally be giving up the ghost. A bigger pot or planting in the ground and fresh air outside (after hardening off) should do the trick. My mother has some mini ones that have been gifts, planted out into the garden after the flowers faded.

Will it matter if the temperatures are very cold in the NW, it won’t kill it off will it ?

Think I would introduce it gradually to outside conditions, you don't want to shock it (if that's possible). Put it out during the day, then bring it in for the night, then after a week or so leave it outside overnight so long as there's no chance of frost.

I would think the leaves may drop, but don't despair, I'm pretty sure it will soon tune into the correct season.

Good morning @Flumpy on an indoor Rose yellow leaves that drop off can be a symptom of a few things. Lack of sunlight, dry soil, and dry air will cause roses to shed their leaves.

I am going to move this Thread to the Rose Forum where it should get you more coverage and answer's:smile:

I typed this 2 hours ago but forgot to hit the post button:doh::smile:

Yes, your rose is starved of nutrients, light and the open air. It should be repotted, kept in a sheltered spot outside, and by June it might look like this.. former indoor supermarket rose.. they survive some years outside.

The yellow leaves won't turn green again. They will drop regardless of the cause. I would harden it off gradually by putting it in a sheltered spot outside on mild days and in again at night/if it's cold for a few weeks.
