So it turns out that when I felt like I was getting worse again after initially improving, I wasn't being a drama queen. Turns out I developed a secondary infection in my lungs, throat and lugholes.

Because I have a rather twisted sense of humour, I couldn't help but be amused by the doctor's reaction when she looked inside my mouth. She was all professional and composed herself almost immediately, but I did notice that brief moment of normal human reaction before doctor mode kicked back in. She'd asked me to open wide and say ah. I didn't get as far as saying ah when just for a second she recoiled a bit while simultaneously proclaiming involuntarily something like 'oh dear'. She very quickly reactivated doctor mode and moved forward for a better look, where she told me my throat and mouth look 'very painful'. Sticking the stethoscope on my back and chest also apparently gave clues that my chest was infected.

I got some penicillin. Today is day 2 of it. I already feel quite a lot better. I'm still staying off solid food for a couple of days though, as I discovered to my disappointment when attempting to eat some chocolate, I can't eat solids without feeling like I'm choking.

This lurgy is really frustrating me. Not just because all lurgies are frustrating, but because the back end of 2022 and pretty much all of 2023 was a bit of a health disaster for me. I should be working on rebuilding my fitness following my setback, but I'm starting to realise that a year of stress and worry and bad sleep seems to take its toll on your immune system. Still, lesson learned. There's opportunity in adversity. I've learned that unlike when I was younger I can't simply focus on the physical side. Turns out it's necessary to find ways to chill out too if you want to be healthy. But again, opportunity strikes, I have two neglected gardens that... well quite honestly couldn't care less what I do to them, but they're there, and I can start doing bits and pieces. And as long as I make a point of not setting myself really high targets, then maybe i can use that.

I hope you feel better soon @Clueless 1 v2. Maybe some hot chocolate would go down well for now.

Sincere best wishes for your improvement and recovery.
Been there myself. After 62 years of almost perfect health I’ve had 8 years of various health problems and hospital admissions/treatments so I can understand your frustrations.
I found that it’s a case of small steps and not beating yourself up when you have setbacks.
          Fingers crossed for you !!

This is almost comedy now. Might as well get it all out my system in one go.

The last couple of mornings I've woken up with manky gunge in my eyes. Why not add conjunctivitis into the mix. I mean, lungs, throat, mouth, ears... My poor old eyes were obviously feeling a bit left out. So I guess it's off to the pharmacy again. Soon they will think I live there.

@Clueless 1 v2 , I hope Day 3 comes with rapid improvement when the antibiotics start winning.

Here's a traditional Finnish remedy I like to share with my British friends.

Take some garlic, peel, and put a clove between each toe and finger and into armpits. Push cloves into your ear holes and nostrils too. (At this point the listener's imagination usually starts to wander judging by the look on their faces :yikes:)

The remedy doesn't actually help, but it looks awfully amusing

A relative of mine has a traditional remedy, called onion syrup.

You slice an onion in half, and balance it flat side up in a bowl. Pour sugar on the freshly cut flat side. Leave in the fridge for a couple of hours for the sugar to draw the onion juice. Serve the syrup by the teaspoon.

It definitely works. Every time. In the sense that if you report feeling unwell, and you are served this remedy, you will have made a miraculous recovery by the time the next dose is offered.

Some of these sound like my grandfathers remedy of a spoonful of black treacle dipped into powdered sulphur and administered to the ailing child, the siblings also got a spoonful each so they didn't feel left out.
Note: grandfather was an esteemed Methodist lay preacher.

I've had the gungy eyes for some time, cant even open them some mornings.

Not suggested for the eyes but just to throw this in the mix @Clueless 1 v2 have you tried soaking your feet in a mustard bath, I think it was my grandfathers remedy when he got a cold, dont know if it works as I never met him.

                      Probably died of mustard poisoning.

Chemist told me to take antihistamine for gungy eyes - worked for me.

That's interesting. Histamine is released as part of the immune response as I understand it. Antihistamine, again as far as I understand and I could be wrong, effectively turn down the immune response a bit if it gets a bit over enthusiastic.

I sometimes get crusty/gungy eyes during hayfever season. My theory is that if my eyes water while I'm asleep so I don't wipe them, the stuff dries into the gunge/crust. A daily antihistamine reduces the eye-watering (as well as the sneezing, nose-running and itchy eyes/throat/soft palate area) so it reduces the eye-gungeiness.

So what Antihistamine do you take.
I buy the cheap stuff from Morrisons, cetirizine, but I notice they also do loratadine, any others?
