    Hi LOL,

These mini plants are bulbils and are small plants that form from the auxilliary bud at the base of the flower and are not seed that germinated on the plant. If you place the bulbils in sharp sand and keep moderately moist and shaded they root within about 4 weeks in your climate.

This is one of the ways agaves multiply as well as seed and rhizomes and this propagation method produces a 'clone' of the parent plant.

Give them time Pete and they will start getting the variation of the parent plant.

I was rather curious about the plantlets .... sorry, bulbils, not being variegated when the mother plant was .... so that answers that question, thank you Agaveman! :thumb:

Even if I had a large garden I would not have such .... they are dangerous to man and beast .... even these bulbils take knife and dagger to you without warning! :D

When I went to Sharm el sheik in Feb. I could not believe it when I saw a whole gerden full of them with white flowers on the end of each spike, a truly amasing sight. It was only on the last day that I bothered to investigate and found out that they were not flowers, but white polystyrene bits that someone had placed on the end of each spike to protect the gardener.

On the subject of Varigated agave, I had mine munched this year in the greenhouse, I could not believe that a creature had made such big holes in something so not only unappetizing but dangerous to the consumer! I dread to think what it was???

Yes I think it is pete, but I just can't understand how such soft slugish things have not been cut to pieces on the agave. they have eaten the flower buds on my hippies too - I am just too munchable!

I did have to laugh Waco at the 'flowers' ......

Sorry I missed your call earlier my elusive friend ... I was here, just didn't get to the phone in time. :dh: If you give me a bit of warning, I can have the phone with me if I'm outside. :thumb:

I often have a small vase on my kitchen windowsill with bits and bobs in it and was surprised when I went to put this rose (then a rosebud) in it the other day .... I noticed the one small bulbil of the Agave had rooted so I think I shall find a home for it at the top of the lane.
