Giving Up On Dahlias!!

I would pinch them out, but would wait till they were 9-10 inches tall.

 

All of the ones in the greenhouse have shoots as does D imperialis in the garden.

Thanks for posting some pictures.

I am assuming that the picture below is a bird’s eye view of a cut stalk. If so, then the old stalk was cut quite low down as it is not hollow and may have compromised the crown. It’s difficult to tell perspective. I normally leave about two inches on the old stalk. Nevertheless, the bit I circled in blue is of interest and maybe an eye developing.



With regards to this tuber, the areas which I have circled maybe developing eyes.



With regards to the last picture, I am assuming this is your new tuber as it is not as gnarly as the other two. I can’t see it well enough to establish whether there looks to be any eyes. There could always be something out of sight on the other side of the stalk on the left hand side though. Try spraying the crowns with a bit of warm water - that sometimes kicks them into action. Don’t give up just yet!

 

I haven't checked my dahlias yet, all left outside for the winter, some in the ground, some in large pots. (Another job to go on my "to do" list) I was not expecting a huge success rate this year. Having said that, I cleared the tops of a couple of pots containing scented leaved geraniums, expecting to find corpses and found a forest of new shoots! They have been outside all winter as well. It has been so wet I didn't think anything would survive, even the dwarf banana has a new shoot. We haven't had frosts so that may be is why I have some survivors.

 

I harvest mine just before the frost, and place under bench, in frostproof shed covered with newspapers sometimes bubble-wrap. In early April I move these rather shriveled tubers into compost filled containers in greenhouse and water well initially. Some will shoot new growth 2 weeks before others. I planted some out yesterday while other will need another week.
I sometimes take cuttings when shoots are big enough or leave and cut in half around early May.

 

I have just checked my dahlias in pots and there are new shoots showing, albeit, well chewed,must give them some slug pellets and renovate the soil. Haven't explored the depths of the border where some are in the ground. The iris nearby are up, must clear the border to let to let in light and air. Another job to go on my "to do" list!

 

Thanks Ezzie for taking the time to examine’ my dahlias. The one you thought was cut low was a bought one this year. The other two are from last year. Another I bought this year is coming on leaps and bounds. The trials of gardening!! Have sprayed today with warm water as suggested. Fingers crossed.

 

When I checked my dahlias in pots there are new shoots through, already munched by slugs. I also checked the hostas, same story so I have dosed them all with slug pellets. I haven't got down the dahlias in the ground yet had better hurry up as the slugs are obviously on the rampage.

 

Most of my Dahlias, which are in pots, in a cold g/h are showing, but there are still a few that are not. I expect some more will come, but there are usually a few no shows. I have 60, so a few no shows would actually be useful.

 

My dahlias are outside all winter and have to take their chance with the weather and slugs.
