    Hi all,
Anyone got a name for these? I’ve been meaning to find out for years.
They come back every year, seem to prefer coming out of walls or rocky areas, and are everywhere up and down the street.
    Cheers all.

Hummingbird hawk moths love centranthus so it's worth having just for that.

That’s interesting @flounder, we get very few orange flowers. Ours are nearly all yellow with just the odd orange one popping up. Occasionally we will get a yellow one with an orange splash. We inherited ours and must admit have never looked to eye if you can get seeds for specific colours

I have orange cambricas which seed around the gravelled areas, but I also collected seed from a verge where there's yellows. Not sown them yet, but I've got a gravel edging along the side of the house, right up against the wall, which will be ideal for sowing some, as well as a few other things which will enjoy the drainage and poor soil there. The nigellas take it over through summer.

I grow a fair amount of Valerian but not had much success with the white. The first time I heard before I saw the hummingbird moth , wow some noise it makes, I had no idea what it was. How on earth does it find where there is Valerian available? I have not seen any anywhere around here except what I have and I am surrounded by farmland where I doubt there will be any. Clever or what?it is fascinating to watch it feed. The plant is worth growing just for it attracting such a wonderful little creature as Thevictorian already said.

I have white and pink and red but I never know which it'll be until it flowers. I like the red the best. I had to wait for the red to arrive. It made its way down to my garden a couple of years ago. Pretty sure I planted the others.

                    Love it or loath it.
Centranthus ruber...comes in deep red, pink and white.
I happen to love it..see pic 4 with it planted as a border in someones garden.
                    The seeds are even exquisite.

They are a migrant from southern Europe and sometimes northern Africa, so they don't mind a bit of distance. They also feed on other flowers like honeysuckle, jasmine, verbena, buddleia etc, but they just seem to really like centanthus.

I have had all three colours appearing from time to time, never planted or sown by me. There's a bit of the red in the front garden just now.

I think some sort of gall mite attacks it, but the affected bits are easily snipped off
Edit: looked it up Trioza centranthi
Seems like it has its own private mite
