Our local Council has said today that people with sheds on allotments should no longer put padlocks on the doors or windows, or even lock them - as thieves do more damage breaking in than if you leave the sheds unlocked and they just steal the tools without damaging the sheds !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps tomorrow they will put in lighting along the paths between allotments to show the way in case the thieves trip on the tools left out for them to steal, damage themselves and claim against the Council!:cnfs::confsd:

NO COMMENT - BUT GISSA A JOB - I CAN DO THAT

    Annoying jobsworths.

It could be worse, they might threathen you with prison or ASBOs for leaving valuable tools unattended around thus encouraging normal law abiding layabouts to start thieving.

(Like that nice council in essex that threatened to send pensioners to prison for feeding the ducks)

You should get onto the council and remind them its their responsibility to keep the allotments safe and secure. Do you have a Community Officer who might help?

I don't know if this is feasible in your case, but how about buying some old tools (spades etc) from a car boot sale and using them at the allotment. Then its not much loss if they are stolen.

John - I am really lucky in having an enormous garden so I have my allotment here and don't have to deal with the idiot councils. I just found the whole thing so ludicrous - I felt I had to post it.

ermmm call me thick if you like but what kind of tools are there even worth stealing from an allotment? the expensive shed fodder of lawnmowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws and such arent going to even be on an allotment are they? am I missing something?

edit: ps I'm not avocating leaving the sheds unlocked I'm just wondering why thieves are stealing forks and spades in the first place, it just doesnt make any sense

Riverside we have had our allotment sheds broken into twice and most of our tools stolen. The spades and Forks were Wilkinsword ones and they were wedding presents so we were most upset to lose them.:(

We had a Merry Tiller Rotavator which was a very expensive item in the shed but because the thieves were disturbed and lots of stuff was in the way, they hadn't got time to mess around with trying to get it out.We had to go round to the garden centres to price up the items lost and at one point the Insurers wern't going to pay out because the tools were away from home.In the end they agreed to pay out so we could at least buy some new tools. Some of the old guys lent us tools until we got them replaced.

The Insurance chap told us that our tools would have ended up at a Car Boot sale and we would never see them again.Mr Kandy had a set of wheel made by the tool room guys where we used to work and it enabled us to drive the rotavator up the hill to our house so we could lock it in the shed in our garden.

It doesn't matter if it is Fork Spade or Wheelbarrow that gets taken,it still costs the victim money to replace the items stolen

Slighty off topic we have had to have a quote for a new door for our caravan because some toe rag decided to break into it while it was in a covered storage barn, and though nothing was taken the quote comes to £500 to repalce the door and frame because if we need to sel the caravan in the future the damage will devalue it.We will no doubt claim off of our Caravan Insurance but it will still cost us £100 excess and I expect next year our premiums will go up.

Kandyfloss you're missing what I'm saying there, any item whether it cost 1p or £1000's of pounds it has sentimental value to it's owner. what I'm saying is why on earth are thieves stealing these tools such as forks or spades in the first place? expensive stuff such as the items listed above and more can be sold on, but a spade?! as said previously it just doesnt make sense

Theres no fathoming out the mentality here riverside, it doesn't make any sense to me either, why bother if all they can get is 50p at a boot sale for a spade. I suppose they hope to get a rotavator or something more expensive, but just take whatever they find

RS,the Insurance Assessor told us that any item of tools that could be sold for a couple of pounds will get stolen. They have lawnmowers on our allotment to use on the grass paths and even use strimmers to cut down long grass. One guy claimed for a chainsaw that he said he used on the allotment to cut down unwanted tree saplings that were too big to be cut down with a saw.

I am sorry if we are both missing the point on this one:scratch::)

We have now got out own shed down on the allotment but nothing of any worth is left in there just bits and bobs (not my hubby by the way) that we have picked up from car boots sales. I'm sure it's just the way of the world that sooner or later some one might break in just see what is what as the shed hasn't got any windows.

I have been told nothing has been nicked off the allotments for quite some years only 6 or 7 grand from the committees money pot and that was an insider job when father and son were in charged of the money and didn't bank a penny of it!Hel.xxx.

Kids, pikies, chavs, vandals... whatever they are, if the shed's locked or not they'll damage it. The wife and I had an allotment which got vandalised on a regular basis. The shed was set alight, even though we didn't keep anything in it because of the risk of getting it pinched.
