Those wind turbines and electric cars don't look so eco-friendly now....

Interesting BBC article that amongst other things, for me, shows that all we are doing with the current so called eco-friendly products is shifting the environmental damage away from our doorstep and putting it on someone else's (and greatly concentrated too, by the looks of it)!

I've never thought of wind turbines as eco-friendly. They're not very reliable and need regular maintenance. So although each kw/h is eco-friendly in terms of generation the footprint to keep them in service is not very eco-friendly at all.

Baotou looks a nightmare of a city.

Agreed. How can they be eco friendly and always nagging us to turn our plugs off, when electric cars are using more electric! If everyone had an electric car, imagine how much we would be using. We don't have anywhere near the infrastructure to cope with them and there's too many niggles to iron out. But I agree with you totally.

The blunt truth is that we have not invested sufficiently in infrastructure for decades; power generation has been trimmed to 'just enough' at peak demand levels whereas, to make the pipe-dreams work, we should have a huge excess of generation.

If we had that, and vehicles could be used as home batteries to some extent, then fair enough - - the problem with leaving it for a smart meter and the energy suppliers to decide when the energy gets 'borrowed' back from a vehicle is quite a simple one... what if you want/need to use the car and they've emptied half of your energy reserve?

                  Indeed.
I've known several people who were convinced into getting an electric with the promise of having a home charger. So they bought the car and waited patiently, to later be told that there are too many conditions in having a home charger. Must have a driveway on your property so that charging cords don't cross a pathway, many in terraced houses have been turned down for one and many other reasons.

Indeed, our utilities and infrastructure were sold off and asset-stripped to people who regarded them as cash-cows. The money that should have future-proofed them went to line their pockets.

For those who point out that pension funds are invested heavily in them all I can say is that some folks have much bigger pension funds than are necessary. Again they’re treated as a way of getting rich instead of a providing a moderate comfortable old age. The whole way we run this country has been turned a$$E about face and instead of being run to benefit the whole of society it’s run to enrich the relatively few, and it stinks.

There are hundreds of houses in my town area that are the old 'Coronation street' type houses, if you get my meaning.
Cant see how they can ever have a charger, the roads are completely choked with cars parked either side, and they have to buy residents parking badges, with no guarantee of a parking space, let alone outside their own house.
                    Its just not practical.

Knowing this country we will install wind turbines and charging points everywhere, then decide nuclear fusion means we don’t need the turbines. Battery garages will come along to remove the charging needs or individual ownership of cars will cease.
@pete I assume these streets have lights...

I cant see where lights comes into it, as if they fit chargers to the system it will all have to be dug up and replaced as I doubt a 100 yr old lighting set up would support the power needed. So its basically start from scratch.
And how much more expensive are these street chargers compared to home charging, the cost of installation will have to be clawed back.

Also bearing in mind people now have to park three streets away if they come home later than the rest, I really cant see them installing as many chargers as cars that now park in these roads.
Then there will be hassle if someone with an ICE vehicle dares to park where a charger is.
Its going to be a nightmare for some people.

You may laugh:biggrin: but some of it is barely electric in those places, thankfully I dont live in them, but I feel sorry for those that do.
