Going about business today I naturally veered into a garden center to buy a yellow Hibiscus with red throat, but got this beauty instead ....

    It's called a Newbiscus 'Mauvelous' ...

The flowers are 26cm (10in) across.

It is hardy but I don't think it will be evergreen (although I was assured it was) but it's not an H rosa-sinensis.

Here's a link to it for anyone interested ....

:thumb: Oh good grief LoL... It is a real beauty..!!! I have only seen one that big at the butterfly place in Jamaica.!! A bloom to die for...... !:flwsml:

:thmb: I am sooo jealous you can grow that one..... I have the ordinary Hibiscus in the garden in Jamaica as you know LoL, but they are having terrible diease problems over there with them, so I am not bringing any cuttings back at the moment....:(
The Jamaica Govt agriculture dept is trying to ID the disease... Seems it is coming in on migrating birds from North America... It is terrible, it just devastates the plants... It is some king of fungal disease..... Hope they can I D it & find a cure......!!:(

I am having trouble with my hibiscus! The leaves are going yellow and dropping off - they have been like this for a while now despite watering and feeding. Sited in partial sun and good soil they should do well.
Can anyone let me know the "secrets of success"?

:) Hi Wilroda, I keep my Hibiscus in the greenhouse over here.. I keep them in the full sun feed with an ericacious feed & have them potted in a mix of erecacious compost mixed with extra horticultural grit & some well rotted bark mulch of my own.. They like to be in a free draining compost.. Mine all seem prety happy with this & flower well....

This is in my greenhouse here..

Certainly a big buttonhole, roders .... 70s style suit? Perhaps a ladies' hat, per chance? Ooh, just thought ... could be a skirt for Strictly ...... :D:D

Marley, I've looked at these on the net for years now and dreamed of having one .. they are truly beauties .... I'll try do cuttings again for you this year (I'm not clever in that respect) .... but keep your fingers crossed. :thumb:

I don't know, wilroda, but I suspect you have the hardy English variety and they will go yellow and lose their leaves this time of the year .... just look forward to next Spring. :)

What beauties LoL and Marley,I ordered 2 of the New Hibs from T&M early this year they were bare root and both never had a glimmer of life when they were planted so I informed them and have been promissed replacements in November, love the colour of the second one Marley.:thumb:
Wilroda you don't say if yours are the tropical hibiscus (hibiscus rosasinensis) if it is yellow leaves can be a problem They are sensitive to sudden changes and to any temperatures below 50º. With our unpredictable weather, that can cause problems if you keep them outside, it is almost always from a sudden change in temperature they will quickly replace any old leaves, check to make sure it is not being over-watered.

:thmb: Ooh that would be great LoL. I can see about a cutting for you from my greenhouse one if you like.. Not tried it before either... Sorry about the Jamiacan ones LoL, I had forgotten about that.... :dh: I did say I would get you a few didn't I.... I couldn't bring any cuttings though as I say for fear of this disease.. I shall see what they are saying this trip...

:thmb: Walnut is so right about them being very sensitive to temperature & waterlogging Wilroda.. :thmb:

Marley, don't think I'd risk bringing diseased ones back with you.

I find with my H Rosa-sinensis ones, I frequently get yellow leaves but a little iron soon sorts them out. But I think I'm right in saying the H syriacus would soon be shedding it's leaves .... it is here already!

If you don't know which one you have, go by the leaves ... the evergreen ones are shiney and the deciduous ones are soft. Unfortunately this new breed is not evergreen ... but it's not a 'one day wonder' either as here it is today still blooming .....

Thanks for the help everyone - without going outside in the pouring rain to check the label i recall that it is a hibiscus syr......something! I didnt realise it likes ericaceous compost and free draining soil. I havent re potted it yet but may give it a go as it could possibly be in the wrong stuff from the garden centre.

Wilroda, you do have the deciduous species, H syriacus and they would be yellowing and losing their leaves at this time ... well, they are here!

I broke down and went back last week and bought the original Hibiscus I went to buy when I discovered the Newbiscus ..... here is H rosa-sinensis 'Columbine' ..... yet another pot to tend to ....
