The problem with this incident is that all we, as the public see, is what a brief camera clip shows, and what the public perceive. A young calf, disorientated and scared, is unpredictable. I've been chased by a young bullock, and shoved by it.
There is no knowing what was just out of camera view, or whom. If the police hadn't acted quickly, and someone had been hurt, they'd have been severely criticised for not preventing an 'incident'.
The police are faced with the need to make quick decisions, and they should be commended for their quick thinking in preventing human injury, whilst not severely harming the calf.
They have my support - particularly as I have needed THEIR help on occasions, and may do so again.

I agree that we are seeing a limited amount, however in the hours immediately following the incident there was a number of videos circulating in the local FB group that gave a much broader view - a view that was of a scared, young cow. There is a very, very marked difference between a young cow and a young bullock, with a young cow extremely unlikely to 'charge' at anyone. They are curious, docile animals and even when scared, whilst they will be 'flighty' and try to get away, they won't charge at you like a bullock would.

I also agree that police are faced with the need to make quick decisions - that does not absolve them of the consequences if they make bad ones, and this is the other very real issue at hand here - the IOPC have bounced it back to the force to investigate internally, the force are not willing to answer anyone (in writing) that was not physically involved and the PCC is also taking a hands-off approach and handing it back to the force themselves to investigate. We all know that the investigation will take many, many months as they always do and the hope will be that the public will forget all about it, then they will quietly release a statement saying that they found in favour of the officer yada-yada-yada... or perhaps a "we could have handled it better, lessons have been learned" (which in itself is a load of bullocks)

So no, they most definitely do NOT have my support on this one and I am utterly disgusted not only by the way that they have handled the incident itself, but then the subsequent investigation and way they will report back on that investigation.

I shall sit in wait now for the days that we ask shoplifters to investigate themselves and decide whether they should report themselves to court for prosecution.

I am sure this goes against many peoples views, but I have had very little faith in the police for most of my adult life.
As an adopted Yorkshireman, the upcoming anniversary of Orgreave is a massive case in point, and it is hard to forget Hillsborough.
I grew up in a "suburb" of Birmingham, and no black kids I knew were happy being in the city centre late at night, apparently arrests for no cause, were not uncommon.
        Then there's the Met!!

We'll sit in the corner together then, as I broadly agree. Don't get me wrong, I've met (and had to liaise with through work) a good few coppers, but I've also met some proper howlers that believe they have rights to do as they please, regardless.

The problem is that there is the police and the copper, the police is the institution and the copper is the poor person who has to work within it , dont even mention all the laws and the things they have to get right, one word out of place and it can mean a prosecution is null and void.
Not a job I would want to do, but as with all jobs you get good and bad.

Firstly, you will probably find that the officers concerned are not doing the investigating, so you can't compare the matter with shoplifters investigating themselves.
I also agree that the police should NOT answer anyone in writing, unless they were personally involved in the incident, which is standard procedure once an investigation has been opened.

If it weren't for the police, I wouldn't be alive today. There may be some bad apples, as in any group of people, but I refuse to tar them all with the same brush, just because I don't agree with the behaviour of a few.

If that were the case, I wouldn't trust anybody!! Or myself. Let alone a mish-mash of individuals on a gardening website!!! :th scifD36:

Problem is they are doing a pretty poor job at the moment and have in many cases in the past (Punkdoc post) . I have family who are the "copper's" and know what a great job they can do, but the good "police" officers are being forced out by poor standards.

I am not for one moment saying it is all police that are bad - not by a very long chalk. Indeed, I have friends who are police officers. But, currently they do have a significant problem whereby there seems to be an attitude of "we do as we please and don't answer to you" - except that a significant proportion of the public have sentiments ranging from disappointment through to disgust and a severe lack of trust. I also have to agree with @DiggersJo that many experienced officers are leaving the job, partly because they feel tarnished by the behaviours of some others, but also because they feel wholly unsupported by their senior management.

The one I will really be going for here won't be police officers - it will be the PCC though. They are paid upwards of £75k, to do what exactly? Why do we need them when we have Chief Constables and Deputies? It is amazing how the PCC wants to be speaking with the public only a matter of weeks ago to get elected, but when the brown stuff hits the fan they hand-off to the Chief Constable. How much money could we save nationally by binning this one role?

I agree, I don’t think PCCs were ever a good idea.
I also don’t believe all police are bad, some are undoubtedly very good.
I met police almost daily on the intensive care unit, and over many years, my overwhelming concern, was the lack of intelligence, common sense and knowledge of what they were, and were not allowed to do. I often found myself intervening to remind them that what they wanted me to do, was illegal.
I also believe that many police hold far right political views, and that as a part of this are racist. There, I can’t unsay that now.

I've lost faith in the police, for many years reporting and nowt being done, the last time i reported an illegel vehicle on the highway to 101 the call handler didn't want to take the info at all then said if i see the vehicle again to ring back!!!!!!! i've seen the vehicle many times since :coffee: i even reported a vehicle driving around with no number plates and the call handler asked for the reg numbler :roflol:
PCC is useless i sent him some picture of things happening and nowt being done and the reply was, with the pictures you sent us there is some illegal things going on and to report these to the police, take about going around in circles!!!!
                      I now don't report anything

It’s a huge problem with recruiting in my opinion.

I’ve worked in child protection and have met some amazingly intelligent, insightful and thoroughly decent officers … both plain clothes and uniformed.

Sadly I’ve also come across some thick ignorant bullies wearing a police uniform. Some men I know tell me that their school peers who went into the police force were, almost without exception, those who were bullies at school.
