Disappointing in the garden so I moved into a pot last year .. still disappointing.
Leaves look damaged but I can never seen anything on or near them

The leaves aren't clearly visible to see what type of damage they have. To me the pot looks quite small for a woody perennial...is it a small variety? Also if you are meant to have a plant in recovery then better off to remove any other plants from it to reduce competition.

Ok you may be right about the pot.
It’s not ever looked right to me even in the garden.
      The violas/pansies have self seeded.
I might put it in another part of the garden.

Don't think the leaves are damaged they tend to look a bit odd when they first emerge I can see a couple of small holes.
They are often yellow at first as well.

I'd replant it in a hot sunny spot and give it a couple of years to settle.

Just to add...prepare a planting hole with good drainage. I've lost loads of Hibiscus syriacus this year, of all sizes, due to the soil becoming waterlogged.

If you are going to keep it in a pot I would mix the compost with some Perlite to aid the drainage, and stand in a warm sunny spot. Not sure about the stones on the top as I think it's difficult to see how wet/dry the compost is.
