Can I thank everyone for their replies. Sorry I didn’t reply…I thought I got emails to tell me when someone had answered my question!

The pots I’m talking about would’ve been left where they are, not potted on. My problem was space…..can’t get wider pots. I have what I have!! I’ve successfully done this with pots where I’ve taken the bottom off so I have extra depth, pot on pot, instead off big wide pots. I was just wondering if it could be done the same way, but without taking the bottom off. The reason being I don’t want to disturb the roots too often.

A lot of my notification emails go into my spam folder, strangely not all of them?!

I’ve had tomatoes grown in pots root into the soil they were standing on. They developed quite a substantial root system in and outside the pot, so yes I think it would work. Some pots have more/larger holes than others so best choose the more generous ones for the top pot (realise you are past the choosing stage for these ones, but if you are wanting to repeat next year)

How much room do you actually have though?
You can buy plastic buckets [3 gallon/13 to14 litres, builders' buckets] for a quid in B&Q and other outlets. They're more than big enough for tomatoes, and just need holes in the bottom.
