.......With this!....I inherited this when i moved into this house a couple of years ago, it's turned into a monster, well over 8ft tall and the trunk is really thick, i want to do something with this corner now, the tips of the plant are going yellow and its just looking a bit "tired" is there anything i can do to revive it or stop it growing any bigger??? i call it it because i don't even know what "it" is should i just dig it out and cut my losses, will the roots be big/deep on it?? any suggestions greatfully received.
Ruby, " it " is a Cordyline australis and it will grow bigger. As the lower leaves turn brown you remove them and this forms the trunk.:thumb::D
You could always chuck it on ebay Rouxbee, buit I would keep it, it looks very healthy and obviously enjoys your care
Thanks for all the replies folks, i didn't really want to dig it out incase the roots have gone under the house, i'm going to give it a good old pruning like David said and have a rethink about what i'm going to plant in this corner around it as it's a bit bare there, Sooooooo sorry Nut, but you aint havin it :p:D:lollol:
If you have a greenhouse or conservatory, I would cvonsider putting one or two birds of paradise under there and bring them in for winter
It looks great after a bit of TLC! Can't you lop cordylines down and won't they put up new shoots from the base to give you multiple heads? I have a fifteen footer in the corner of my garden and I usually just trim off the brown leaves every year to keep it looking good, but it's getting too big for the garden now.
Honeytone yes you can cut them down to what ever height you want they will start to sprout again at the cut off point sometimes multi headed,Yuccas can be treated in the same way.
Great! I'm going to give that ago. Any particular time of year I should do it? Sorry to hijack your thread, Rouxbee. d-yy
I would leave it untill spring it will give you a better chance of rooting the bit you cut off and making another plant.
