If you leave a decent sized stump, then dig round the base of the conifer you can sever the main roots and use the trunk as a lever to rock it back and forth and out of the ground. You will need to chop roots as it becomes obvious which ones are still holding it in the ground.

If your planting shrubs etc round the area, then chopping it off at ground level and let the shrubs mask the stump would be the easiest way, but is probably not the ideal way.

How thick is it at ground level?

Hey - I've taken out 3 conifers in the past year, it's likely there are roots that are slightly deeper then you've already dug - what I did was:

    - dig a hole about 2 feet all around the stump and and about a foot deep
    - drive an axe into the soil - it should go straight through and quite deep - if not you'll hit a root.
    - I used a pick axe to lever the ball root out of the ground
    - use two people to push and pull the stump and wiggle it around.

Ideally, you should have keep the dtunk 6-7 foot to give you more leverage. Conifers are one of the easiest trees to remove.

It's back breaking work - but the only way to get rid ...

Let me know how it goes

    Nick

Yep, sorry Bob I was referring to the amount of posts we get about stump removal and hoping to rot it down. Hope it wasn't taken the wrong way.
Stump grinder still the quickest option! Oh, or dynamite but I'm not sure how the council feel about this;)

Dont try pulling it with a vehicle, youll only break something mechanical...... Stump grinder or just cut it off a few inches below ground level and forget.
