Please excuse my moan but i am at the end of my tether with my council. I have been at the top of the moving list for months now on special needs grounds. im totally wheelchair bound but cannot get into my bathroom or kitchen as they are too small. The house has been deamed a fire risk by the MS Society too. Now im seriously considering renting a property that i can adapt.

If anyone knows a rural property that the owners are willing to let me have adapted and take dss rent would you please point them my way. I have been told it could be years before i get anywhere and im going mad! Years more of having to wash from a bucket in my front room and not to mention the other things.

    I live in west yorkshire
and just want a two bedroomed property thats all on one floor. Im at the point where id go and live in a tent if i had to.

    Id be happy again.
sory to moan but i dont know where to try next.:(

    Hi willow,

Sorry to hear your problems with the council. Fistly, who told you it would take years-that is not true, CAB website will give you a clearer picture, but (from what I remember I am a private landlord and don`t deal with the council) I think they have a legal obligation to make the place habitable and a bucket in the front room as bathroom is not acceptable. How about a chat with your GP or better still your GPs receptionist-they know everything about this sort of stuff.

As for your question, you are in a renters market so in a very lucky position.

There are a lot of buy to let mortgages not getting paid so you are the scarce commodity, you will need to write down your list of wants and go with them to an estate agents, or lettings agents. The only thing that you will have to take pot luck on is the location. Also be aware-very aware, that private landlords are nowhere near as able to pay for repairs at the moment so repairs may take longer than with the council, although they will quite happily let you modernise their property for them they won`t ( not might not but absolutely will not) reimburse you or reflect it in taking a lower deposit (usually 2 months full rent).

Sounds gloomy, but Im sure the council have a legal obligation to make the houses they rent habitable by their tenants.

Sorry to hear your situation willow, surely the council should sort this out, or modify your existing place to make it habitable - I thought they did this as a matter of urgency - but this is something I have no experience so all I can offer is my sympathies.

Do you know what really makes me mad?
The fact that I cannot do anything about Willows problems.
Thinking of you during your troubles.

Willow sorry if this sounds personal, but do you have carers to help you?? if so then social services should be aware of your situtation as carers should/would have reported your predicament, if this is the case then get them in to review you and your living conditions as a matter of urgency, they HAVE to act on it, you shouldn't be resorted to living like that, failing that get your GP, local councillor anyone like that on board too, the longer and louder you shout the more they'll have to listen, i know it must be frustrating for you and i hope you get this sorted out and quickly!!

Just had a thought-how about contacting your local paper-you could send a "will you assist me?"email to them-they could send a reporter round. They like a chance to have a pop at the local councils

Hi Willow, I am sorry to hear of your problem...
like Rouxbee suggests, if I was you I would get in touch with social services or similar, i would guess also an environmental health officer would be useful ( since you mention about the difficulty to get to the toilet etc...), but make sure you make yourself heard !

A letter to your MP might assist - they sometimes can make things happen more
than a local councillor and in this present 'climate' they will all be after the votes!

Hope you get sorted soon as it must be a desperate situation for you.

    Do keep us updated.

Yes you should make sure that your MP, MEP and local/district councillors are doing their best to help you. I have used this site successfully in the past:
    http://www.writetothem.com/

Enter your Post Code and the web page lets you send a message to some or all of your elected officials. I have had great success using this on one particular problem, my MEP really got stuck in and helped - the others came back with varying responses, but I only needed one of them to succeed. Good luck :thmb:

Willow involve the social services in our area they usually do an assesment the council then do the modification my wifes uncle (who has his own property) had them in they built him a downstairs loo,put a stailift in and made a shower room out of his bathroom at no cost and he was minted.

:( Oh dear Willow what a dreadful situation to be in.! I can only agree with all the above.. I am a care to en elderly gent who has allot of problems.. We were not keen to get social services involved, but after a chat with his GP that was what we did.. I have to say they were wonderful & we got him sorted for aids & adaptions very quickly..!!

:thmb: Get out there & rattle a few cages Willow, you shouldn't be struggling like that... Trouble is today unless we shout & make a noise these days the powers that be, will just let you slide by without anything being done or getting help..!!

:thumb: Good Luck..! Do keep us posted, here for you..!
