Tried Google Pay for the first time today - for the weekly shop. There isn't a £ limit on contactless transactions as there is if you use a normal debit/credit card - which is a plus for me.

Liked that there is a separate record of each transaction - payee and amount - recorded on the 'phone.

Thing is - NFC does not turn on automatically when I open the app - does anyone know - is it safe/normal to leave NFC on all the time?

Phone needs to be 'active' for NFC to work, ie you just need to wake the screen before tapping the pay or transaction point.
That way its not always on and people can't, for example, run a reader over your pocket in the street.
My NFC setting is always on

Is this anything similar to paying with a barcode on your phone?
I saw someone doing that the other day.

It's a contactless payment - instead of waving you debit/credit card over the till - you wave your 'phone.

I've done a bit of googling on security - your account details are not shared with the shop - so it's not possible for a rogue employee to nick your card details - they cannot 'swipe' it and read the card details, because there is no card. Apparently, each transation has it's own security set up - so even if some mastermind criminal nicks your transaction details and decodes the card - they can only repeat the transaction with the same store for the same amount and you are told when there is a transaction - so if it does happen you can block the card straight away.

Tea leaves can't be bothered with breaking down all the security - It's just too much hassle. It's more secure than a card.

Until you lose a signal, you lose your phone, or you drop it and it dont work anymore.
Sounds fool proof, until something goes wrong.

          Hi Guys,

Just found this older thread about Google Wallet and some helpful beginners info from @clanless.

However wondered if there were any pitfalls we beginners must look out for when using such systems ?

Probably the biggest question we have is should we use Google Wallet or as we now have a Samsung phone which we like, should we use Samsungs Wallet ?

The app has developed a lot since the thread was started. It's now more comprehensive than just a payment method and you can add all sorts of cards, tickets and loyalty schemes to it.
No real pitfalls I have encountered, just don't lose your phone!
I use the Google wallet as I have a Google phone, never tried the Samsung version

Ah, thought there might be a more supple reason, no worries as we never use our real names or real location on any site; use different ones on each site as well !

Seems a close call between the two, Samsung Wallet does seem natural for Samsung supporting phones etc while Google Wallet does seem to have a broader base, though as always do we want the big G to know everything ?

You will be surprised what can be done in a few years hence.
I don't use a mobile for any finance, but know from what I've read Google is fine with most banks/shops etc, but Samsung not quite so much.
